What you’ll study
The construction industry is undergoing a digital revolution, and BIM is at its heart. Mandated on UK public sector projects since 2016 and increasingly expected by private clients, BIM competency is no longer optional for construction professionals, it is a career-critical skill. This course addresses that need directly, taking you from the fundamentals of BIM theory through to practical mastery of AutoDesk Revit, the industry’s leading BIM authoring platform.
You will explore how BIM transforms the way projects are designed, built, and managed, reducing costly errors through clash detection, improving collaboration across disciplines, and enabling data-driven decision-making throughout the project lifecycle. Whether your goal is to win more work, meet employer expectations, or future-proof your career, this course gives you the structured grounding to get there.
The programme is highly practical: you will work through real construction scenarios, building models from the ground up, coordinating data, and producing print-ready documentation. The learning format allows you to apply learning to your own workplace between sessions.
During this course, you will:
- Understand the origins, standards, and impact of BIM on modern construction, and its role in improving project collaboration and efficiency.
- Navigate Revit’s interface and master essential modelling tools including grids, walls, doors, floors, roofs, and layout management.
- Develop complex architectural and structural elements such as curtain walls, staircases, and custom component families.
- Work within multi-user environments, link and import CAD files, and export data for seamless collaboration across project teams.
- Apply BIM tools for clash detection, design verification, and data analysis to prevent errors and optimise project outcomes.
- Create and format annotated drawings, schedules, and detailed construction plans ready for professional documentation.
- Understand the UK BIM Framework, ISO 19650, and how BIM Level 2 compliance relates to employer and client expectations.
- BIM in Context and Revit Fundamentals: Introduction to BIM principles, UK BIM mandate, and industry standards (ISO 19650). Revit interface orientation, project setup, working with grids, levels, walls, and basic structural elements.
- Modelling Techniques: Modelling floors, roofs, ceilings, and staircases. Inserting and configuring doors and windows. 3D views, section views, and basic rendering to communicate design intent.
- Modelling Techniques (Advanced Components): Curtain walls, complex roofs, and custom component families. Topography. Schedules and project metadata.
- BIM Collaboration and Data Management: Linking Revit models, managing shared coordinates, and importing/exporting CAD files. Multi-user worksharing. Clash detection overview. BIM Execution Plans.
- Documentation, Review and Assessment: Creating and formatting annotated construction drawings and sheet sets. Printing and plotting workflows. Full project model review. Course Q&A.
How you’re taught
Teaching and learning will take place using a programme of hands-on workshops, tutor-led demonstrations, seminar group discussions, and individual tutorials. Participants work in Revit from the outset, building real models and solving real construction problems throughout.
This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus
The course includes the Autodesk Certified User (ACU) examination, delivered online on campus via Certiport. The test consists of 30 questions (a combination of theory and practical tasks) completed within 50 minutes. The exam date will be confirmed to you closer to the start of your course.
98% of previous course attendees were satisfied with the course, received the attention they needed and would consider doing another short course at NTU.
Contact hours
You will receive 33 contact hours of quality tuition with an experienced tutor.
