This course combines the practical and theoretical issues of building defects with their causes, diagnosis and remedial actions.
It’s useful for anyone in the construction sector who’s looking to develop their overall knowledge and understanding of building failures, deterioration processes and assessment strategies.

What you’ll study
On this course you'll look into remedial actions related to key structural elements of domestic and residential dwellings, including:
- foundations and floors
- drainage and basements
- external and internal walls, including cladding
- dampness and condensation
- floors (from group floor and first floor to solid and suspended timber)
- roofs (pitched and flat)
- concrete and asbestos.
What will I gain?
A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
Should the assessment be successfully completed, the course provides 5 NTU undergraduate credits.
- gain an overview of the relationship between construction technology and building defects
- learn about different deterioration mechanisms (including deformation versus failure)
- consider the principals of inspections
- understand how to problem solve and use pathology processes
- plan for the most appropriate method of investigation using modern technology and equipment such as moisture meters, endoscopes, thermal imaging cameras and drones
- learn how to effectively write reports on your findings.
How you’re taught
Teaching and learning will take place using a programme of workshops, demonstrations, seminar groups and tutorials.
This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus.

Campus and facilities
You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.
You will receive an email one week before the course starts with joining instructions on where to go for the first day.
You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
