What you’ll study

As the built environment increasingly relies on digital documentation, the ability to procure and utilise UAV (drone) surveys effectively has become an essential professional skill. However, many architects, engineers, and project managers commission aerial surveys without fully grasping the complex regulatory landscape, how to rigorously audit a commercial pilot's competence, or how to accurately evaluate the quality of the delivered data. Relying solely on standard CAA licensing is often insufficient for sufficient risk management on complex sites.

This course solves this problem by transforming delegates from passive recipients of drone data into highly informed commissioners. It bridges the gap between raw data acquisition and professional application. You will learn to navigate the realities of CAA auditing, scrutinise pilot Diligence Checklists (including recency logs, maintenance, and accident reporting), and confidently specify scopes for varying assets, from heritage structures to live infrastructure. By mastering the fundamentals of photogrammetry and participating in hands-on data interpretation workshops, your practice will be empowered to mitigate commercial risk, ensure strict compliance, and integrate high-quality 3D deliverables seamlessly into asset management and design workflows.

  • Analyse real-world case studies spanning high-risk rail infrastructure and heritage conservation to understand specialized documentation challenges.

How you’re taught

This course will be delivered in person on the Nottingham Trent University city campus.

You will receive direct tuition that blends theoretical instruction with highly practical, scenario-based learning. The course is specifically designed for built-environment professionals and balances lecture-style delivery with interactive group exercises.

Tutor profile:

Paul MacMahon is an architectural project manager and UAV specialist with nearly two decades of experience spanning architectural design, planning and UAV-based surveying. Practicing in the built environment since 2011, he has a strong background in integrating commercial drone workflows into architectural and engineering practices.

Paul has over a decade of hands-on experience in UAV-based geomatics, photogrammetry, and survey data processing. His commercial background focuses heavily on navigating complex, high-risk environments, having provided specialised UAV consultancy, site surveying and data processing for major national clients including Network Rail, Historic England, the Environment Agency, Aecom, Atkins, and Jacobs. He has also served as a Senior UAV Pilot and Data Analyst, managing operations and geomatics data acquisition for large-scale national infrastructure.

In addition to UK infrastructure, Paul has notable international experience in the heritage, conducting drone-based architectural documentation of traditional settlements in the Sultanate of Oman in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Culture.

Academically, Paul holds an MArch from Nottingham Trent University and has taught as a lecturer for both undergraduate and postgraduate architecture students at NTU.

You will receive an email one week before the course starts with joining instructions on where to go for the first day.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Entry requirements

Level: Professional

Entry requirement: No prior experience in piloting UAVs or using photogrammetry software is required, as this course is entirely focused on the procurement, management, and interpretation of commercial drone data rather than the physical act of flying.

However, you must have basic computer skills and be familiar with Windows operating systems and file management, as you may be independently navigating and evaluating 3D datasets (such as point clouds and meshes) on desktop computers during the interactive workshops. A professional or academic background in the built environment (such as architecture, engineering, asset management, or surveying for example) is highly recommended to ensure the case studies and procurement strategies are relevant to your practice.
