Introduction:
In an increasingly complex environment, this course explores the leadership, organisational, individual and social factors that impact organisational performance and the quality of working life. It provides insight into how leaders can engage strategically with key issues to make more effective leadership decisions that shape organisational success.
Drawing on organisational behaviour, leadership studies, systems thinking, psychology and the social sciences to understand organisational and interpersonal dynamics, the course provides leaders with greater strategic insight and an evidence base for effective decision-making.
You will rethink what it means to be a leader, broaden your perspective, learn how to engage strategically with key leadership challenges, and put evidence-based learning into practice within your own organisational context.

What you’ll study
During the course, you will explore theory and practice in relation to leading strategically in complex environments. You'll reflect on what it means to be a leader, including ethical leadership, the paradoxes inherent in leadership, and how dysfunctional leadership can impact organisational health.
By examining psychologically informed approaches to understanding individual performance, collaboration, engagement and wellbeing, you will learn how to maximise both performance and wellbeing within your teams.
You will also consider contemporary perspectives, current challenges and the future of work, reflecting on what this means for you as a leader.
Accreditations gained by completing the course
Upon successful completion of the course you will gain 10 credits which can be built towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management Practice.
This session focuses on approaches to strategic leadership. We will explore the knowledge, skills, and mindset shifts needed to lead strategically, such as:
- leadership theory and practice
- understanding the nature of strategic leadership
- being a strategic leader
- ethical and inclusive leadership
- exploring the strategic context.
During this session, we will adopt a systems approach to understanding the organisation, exploring approaches to leadership that support organisational effectiveness. Topics include:
- leading across the organisation
- understanding the organisation as a system
- leading in complexity
- understanding organisational culture.
During this session, you will understand how to better engage people with the vision, mission and goals of the organisation, supporting performance and wellbeing. Topics include:
- approaches to understanding people and performance
- the social organisation: Building collaboration and teamwork
- understanding employee engagement
- supporting resilience and wellbeing.
This will be an online session conducted via teams.
How you’re taught
This course will take place over four days, with three in-person, through masterclasses, workshops, activities, and peer discussions, and one online session on day four.
As this is a 10-credit Post Graduate Level 7 course you will complete an assignment. This is designed to be practical and applied and help you to critically analyse an issue within your organisation with recommended solutions.
Once successfully completed, the 10-credits at Level 7 can be used to build towards our Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management course.
This course will be delivered in person at our City Campus in Nottingham.

This course is delivered by: Dr Suzanne Ross.
Suzanne is a Senior Lecturer in Executive Education and qualified and experienced Executive Coach.
Suzanne has had an impressive career working in a variety of sectors and is passionate about leadership, entrepreneurship and education.
