Course information

Successfully complete this course and be awarded 10 UK credit points.

Nottingham is a vibrant city with unique examples of architecture from the past 1,000 years. It is surrounded by countryside, villages and castles that represent some of England’s best examples of building and town planning.

This course is ideal for anyone currently studying architecture or history who has a passion for drawing. It will explore the concept of people and place through drawing (freehand and digitally). You'll also learn the notion of drawing as a tool for recording and communicating ideas about architecture and our urban landscape.

It will be a practical course based on location and in the design studio. There will be a trip to London to visit an architectural exhibition at the Royal Academy (or somewhere similar) with time to explore our exciting capital.

The course will begin with an orientation to Nottingham to help you appreciate the city’s social and industrial history. The course will include architectural history, individual and group project work, and presentations to demonstrate your artistic understanding of drawing, texture and pattern.

You will undertake project work that:

  • uses different materials ‘in-situ’ to record architecture
  • involves site observations to help you engage with a location
  • explore how people interact with the environment.

The focus is on improving your observation and hand drawing skills, as well as how to use the computer as a tool to generate images.
