Diversity and Leadership

Nottingham Trent University and I-Shou University collaborate on a COIL project exploring Diversity and Leadership, bringing business students together for cross-cultural learning.

In the first half of the academic year, through the combined efforts of the BA (Hons) International Business Management and BA (Hons) Business Management and Human Resource Management programmes, we successfully delivered the first Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and I-Shou University (ISU) COIL project entitled Diversity and Leadership in Contemporary Context.

This collaborative initiative brought together Level 5 BA (Hons) Business Management and HR students from the Nottingham Business School (NBS) and their counterparts from I-Shou University (ISU). NBS students participated in their core module, Human Resource Development, led by Saurabh Jain, while ISU students focused on their leadership module, led by Tylor Burrows.

With unwavering support from student academic mentors, the NBS undergraduate team (Dr. Rachel Welton and Dr. Yvonne Carlisle from NBS International), BABMHR course leader (Dr. Tolu Fadipe), NTU Global Associate Director (Chris Crabot) and ISU representative (Chia-yu Yu), this enriching five-week initiative unfolded from 25th October to 23rd November, engaging a total of 51 students (27 from ISU and 24 from NBS).

The COIL project featured a variety of live-streamed lectures (one delivered by Dr. Claire Taylor from NBS and another by Tylor Burrows from ISU), cultural sessions, and support workshops. Students collaborated seamlessly to create a 10-minute group video project, managing challenges such as time zone differences, effective communication, and the coordination of subject-related content, including global remote training programmes, international workplace bullying, and performance appraisal conflicts.

Several ISU students are considering joining NBS next academic year to pursue the BA (Hons) International Business Management programme. This COIL project has provided them with valuable insights into this distinctive NBS approach, and we look forward to welcoming these students in the upcoming academic year.

It is worth noting that I-Shou University is one of NTU’s strategic partners; the collaborative journey between the two institutions began in 2013 when NBS initiated the partnership. In 2023, both universities celebrated the 10th anniversary of this successful alliance.
