Emmanuel Amissah - Principal Lecturer

NTU provides the support that’s needed to grow – Emmanuel has achieved so much already, his colleagues and their encouragement have spurred him on all the way. A unique environment that’s truly hard to find.

It is the kind of environment anyone would love to work in. You feel at home, which helps you to perform at your best.

I joined NTU in 2013 as a lecturer. Listening to my friends, who were already working at the university, talk about their positive experiences, inspired me to apply for a job here. I was then given a great opportunity to lead a module and two years later I moved on to become the assistant course leader for the economics undergraduate course. Earlier this year I became the programme leader for economics undergraduate courses, which involves overseeing the smooth running of delivery and assessments. Also, I have responsibility of leading some of the modules we deliver in the department.

I believe my journey shows why NTU is a special place to work. There is room to develop, and you are encouraged to do so, whilst being supported all the way. The supportive environment at NTU is really unique. Since joining the university, I have enjoyed great support from colleagues in my department, also with other departments or professional services. They are always there to help find your way and provide support at difficult times, which is amazing. It’s this support and the respect which spurs me on to do even more. It is the kind of environment anyone would love to work in. You feel at home, which helps you to perform at your best.

What do I think makes NTU special? The consistent hunger to improve. The uniqueness about this is how everybody is brought onboard to pursue this drive. The contribution of every NTU colleague is valued in the bigger agenda.

The balance of home/office working in my team is heavenly. The option to work from home when I do not have any face-to-face lectures or meetings is really lovely, especially when you need a different environment for research related duties. What I love most about the balance of home/office working is the offer of flexible options when something unexpected happens, such as a family illness. Sessions can be rearranged or colleagues are ready to step in, where they can. I believe this is a unique and valuable support system. Also, the university has given us access to IT equipment for home working which has made both home and office working comfortable, especially during the pandemic.
