Harry Franklin - Planning and Performance Executive

After studying at NTU, Harry began his career on the Graduate Development Programme - now he has a permanent role at the University, where his passion for making a difference to the students his team supports is really embraced.

Being able to see the direct positive effect of my team’s work within a variety of processes and areas at NTU is very rewarding, it’s the best part of my job.

Having studied for three memorable years at NTU, I was keen to be a part of the huge integral unit that makes the University tick and contribute to future development. I began my career at NTU on the graduate development programme working as an Innovation Project Coordinator within Strategic Planning and Change. After a really enjoyable year, I applied for a permanent role within the same team as a Planning and Performance Executive, and I was fortunate enough to be given the position. My knowledge of the higher education industry has dramatically improved, as has my passion for making a difference to the students we support through key projects.

In my role, I support planning and performance activities such as the student number planning cycle and provide data and insight to colleagues across the University to ensure we are effectively supporting decision making throughout the student recruitment cycle. I also work alongside my line manager to submit NTU towards national and global awards, such as the QS World Rankings and THE Impact Rankings.

Being able to see the direct positive effect of my team’s work within a variety of processes and areas at NTU is very rewarding, it’s the best part of my job. Also, as my team is directly involved in numerous award/ranking submissions, it is incredibly satisfying when a great result comes in for NTU (for example QS stars or the THE Subject Rankings). Finally, being part of the student planning process makes it feel as though my role is closely connected to the student’s experience here.

NTU’s culture is fantastic with regards to how the staff support each other. The student experience and institutional values are also at the forefront of the work we do, this gives us the drive to want to achieve the best that we can.

Outside of my regular responsibilities, I was involved in this year’s graduate development scheme interviewing process which was a great experience being on the other side of the questions. Also, each year our team is greatly involved with confirmation and clearing , and it’s brilliant to be able to talk directly to future NTU students and guide them through the process.

The support at NTU is very good. I have had, and continue to receive, fantastic support from my team and mentors. As a result, learning new skills and getting involved with new projects is made very easy. It also means that working with other colleagues on a project is very impactful.
