Our new building
This striking new 5,300 square metre building, designed by award-winning architects Hawkins\Brown, will empower our NTU community by creating interdisciplinary spaces that encourages experimentation and supports new thinking, communication and expression within our School of Art & Design.
Our new building will respect neighbouring heritage and our surrounding buildings by selecting appropriate material and palette tones, whilst providing contrasting qualities of light, texture and transparency.
NTU are intending to submit a planning application for this development mid March 2021. Usually, we would host a series of small public consultation events to allow our colleagues, students and members of the public to see the plans and discuss them with architects and development partners before a formal planning application is submitted. However, due to Government social distancing regulations and other COVID-19 restrictions, this dedicated webpage has been created instead.
As our colleagues, students and neighbours, we are keen to hear your thoughts about our proposals to help inform and shape the design of the project throughout the planning process. To view an outline of our proposals, including artist impressions and floor plans, please see below. An online form is available below for you to share your feedback with us.
We have an opportunity to create a new landmark building to meet the growing needs of our School of Art & Design. We have been influencing, inspiring and innovating art and design for over 175 years and as one of the world’s leading art and design schools, we are are focused on our future, and proud to be shaping what comes next.
Our new building is intended to deliver exemplar carbon credentials supporting NTU's zero carbon commitment and other sustainable objectives. It will also create more green spaces for our students, colleagues and local community to enjoy whilst enhancing the biodiversity of our University environment.
Acting as a welcoming gateway to the City Campus, our new building will create an active and exciting ground floor to attract passersby and maximise connections with other buildings on the campus.
Our new building will provide dedicated spaces for visual communication, moving image and digital screen disciplines. It will also enhance the school’s desire for more inter-disciplinary collaboration, social learning and celebration of work in progress as well as finished pieces.
