Role

Andy leads the Apprenticeship Quality and Compliance team at NTU. The team is responsible for leading and supporting initiatives relating to apprenticeship course design and delivery, ensuring NTU apprenticeships deliver outstanding outcomes for apprentices and their employers. The team lead on all apprenticeship quality and funding assurance activity, including the University’s monthly funding return to the ESFA, staff training, data analysis, quality monitoring and subcontractor management. Andy is also the University Ofsted nominee for FE and Skills, acting as the main link with the inspectorate and leading on NTU’s preparation for inspection. Andy is deputy chair of the Apprenticeship Portfolio Sub-committee, and founder and co-chair of the Apprenticeships and Work-based Learning TILT Practice and Scholarship group.

Career overview

Andy has worked in the youth and education sector for around 20 years, working predominantly in vocationally led higher education. Andy is an experienced education professional and has taught and led teams in secondary, further and higher education settings, progressing through lecturing, course leadership, subject and curriculum leadership roles in that time. Prior to joining NTU, Andy was a member of the education senior management team at the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies where he held overall responsibility for leadership of the Music and Events Curriculum area, with courses ranging from Level 2 BTEC to BSc/BA undergraduate level and a departmental staff team of 23 tutors and course leaders.

Passionate about developing people and building teams. Andy’s main areas of expertise include apprenticeships quality and compliance, vocational/work-based learning, curriculum design, higher education learning, teaching and assessment.

Andy has a First Class Honours BSc from DeMontfort University, a PGDip in Education from Nottingham Trent University, and a Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of Lincoln.

Research areas

Andy is founder and co-chair of the Apprenticeships and Work-based Learning TILT Practice and Scholarship group. The group is primarily concerned with exploring approaches to learning and teaching in work-based forms of education, including apprenticeships, skills and technical education, with the aim of promoting conversations around effective pedagogy and practices at NTU and across the sector.

External activity

Andy has carried out external examining roles at other universities and works as a contracted Ofsted Inspector for Further Education and Skills inspections of colleges, independent training providers and universities.

Andy represents NTU as a member of the UVAC Higher Education and Awarding Organisations Vocational Qualifications Committee.

Andy has presented at several national conferences on the subject of apprenticeships course design and delivery, including the Degree Apprenticeships National Conference, UVAC National Conference and the Advance HE Annual Teaching and Learning Conference. He has also delivered webinars on the subject of apprenticeships quality as part of the UVAC webinar series.
