Role

I am a Senior Lecturer of Construction Project and Commercial Management at Nottingham Trent University. I undertook my PhD and MSc studies at Northumbria University. I was working as a University Teacher at Loughborough University from 2021- Feb 2023.

My current research interest involves resilience. With the current economic climate to manage inflation and the high energy crisis, my research has been involved in a theme of resilience. At the moment, our work has been on carbon and energy resilience for projects, organisation for commercial resilience and building occupants for comfort and well-being.

I worked in Malaysia as a quantity surveyor for several years, managing costs for both private and public-funded projects. Then, the complexities of processes and people in projects have sparked my interest in improving client requirement communication in design processes. This is the springboard for me to pursue my Master's study and create research based on my interests, which will then develop the project for my Doctorate study. I worked with Newcastle Tyne and Wear Mental Health hospitals for my doctorate study to improve design communication.

I am leading Construction Industry Practice with a focus on creating a solid foundation and enthusiasm among the students in their first years joining quantity surveying and construction management students. We work with project partners to give our students real-life projects and work with professionals to give real construction experience while building skills and knowledge to the students.

Research areas

Research and expertise

I am interested in exploring the resilience of building and maintaining our facilities and infrastructures to people and the environment. Specifically, we often forget to consider the impact of the building and infrastructure towards people and environmental aspects in positioning the building or infrastructure in the community. At the same time, it is also essential to position the interest to the commercial resilience of the organisation since organisations support community growth. The facility should improve and enhance the community's resilience while keeping the environment for future generations. I am also intrigued to expand my knowledge to explore projects to understand the value of the projects and the impact beyond their cost and its impact on the budget to build and maintain without sacrificing our duty to the environment. These are my particular interests, but not limited to:

  • Resilience in the project: energy, carbon and its effect on people and the environment
  • Commercial resilience in organisations
  • Professional values in managing risks in projects
  • Social and cultural norms in women and progression in the construction industry
  • Building with culture, heritage and wellbeing: sustainable development of minority communities
  • Unheard voices: Tackling differential outcomes for underrepresented students

Current research activity [undertaken since the last REF]

  • Carbon and its impact on historical projects
  • Risk identification forecasting for improved cost management
  • Visual representation as a means of data collection
