Role

Kevin is an industry based practitioner who works part time for Nottingham Trent University as a Senior Lecturer. He teaches across several courses where his areas of specialism are Project Initiation, Funding and Business Planning, Technical and Strategic Project Management, Procurement, Contracts, Project Control and Finance, Cost Management, Risk Management and Communication. Kevin is currently undertaking a Professional Doctorate with Nottingham Trent University. NTU funded his teacher training to secure his services as an Hourly Paid Lecturer. Kevin is at a stage of his career where he is looking to give something back to the construction industry following nearly forty years of practice as both a contractor and consultant and sees the part time Senior Lecturer role as the ideal vehicle for this.

Career overview

Kevin is Founder Partner of the Focus Group and he continues to oversee their multi-disciplinary consultancy team of 70 staff in the delivery of approximately £300m of capital projects per annum on a part time basis out of offices in Nottingham, London, Leicester and Newark. He set up Focus Consultants in 1994 and has grown/developed the chartered surveying practice into the £5m fee turnover organisation that it is today providing Economic Development, Project Management, Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying and Environmental Surveying consultancy services. Focus also recently acquired MES Building Solutions, a welcome addition to the Focus Group strengthening the range of environmental consultancy services offered.

Kevin is also a developer and investor with an evolving portfolio of commercial and residential properties. His career started on the contracting side with Beazer and Hollandsche Beton Group (now BAM Construction) working on a wide range of international projects. He moved into consultancy and became an Associate of Nottingham based Carter Walker Associates before leaving to set up Focus Consultants from his dining room in Beeston just outside of Nottingham.

Kevin has been Lead Consultant / Project Manager on a ranges of prestigious programmes and projects including the £200m regeneration of St Georges In Leicester into a Cultural Quarter including CURVE (£60m), Pheonix Digital Media Centre (£15m), LCB Depot Creative Industries Depot (£5m) and £5m of public realm improvements. His local projects include Nottingham Castle (£26m), New Art Exchange (£6m), Nottingham Playhouse Sky Mirror (£2m), Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Royal Terraces (£3m), Lakeside Pavilion (£5m) and the Galleries of Justice National Museum of Law (£12m) to name but a few.

Research areas

Kevin is interested in all areas of Project Management and Chartered Surveying with a particular focus on project creation/initiation, project control and finance and contractual practice. His Doctorate by established work is looking to provide a significant and coherent contribution to the current state of knowledge of professional practice and practitioners through communication of twenty five years of best practice experience in leading, running, nurturing and growing a modern multi-disciplinary consultancy practice. Kevin is also published on his work on ‘The Changing Role of the Quantity Surveyor’ and he was also a contributor to the Construction Management Forum Report whilst studying for his Masters in Project Management at Reading University.
