Mike Siebert

Lecturer

School of Architecture Design and the Built Environment

Role

Dr Mike Siebert is a Lecturer in Architecture at the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment.

Mike has come to academia after a long career in design and construction as a practicing architect, specialising in sustainability and affordable housing. He now plays a key role in the development and delivery of the new HTQ Future Homes Design course delivered out of NTU's Mansfield Hub.

His transition from industry came after many years part time tutoring at both Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham involving a number of overseas design and build projects, culminating in his doctoral research into the barriers to innovation in volume housebuilding.

He has since written a book related to this research entitled 'A Systems Thinking Approach for the Construction Industry' which has formed the basis for much of the teaching he now delivers through the HTQ and other short courses.

Career overview

Mike has spent his career developing affordable solutions to low carbon housing, building them through his company Ecologic Homes Ltd. and promoting his solutions through his consultancy practice, Ecologic Homes Consultancy Ltd.

Research areas

Mike is now developing research proposals at NTU around his Systems Thinking based solutions as outlined in his recent book, Applying a Systems Thinking Approach to the Construction Industry.

External activity

Mike has many industry contacts through his work in this area of expertise and this region, dating back to 2005 when he first developed and built award winning homes for Metropolitan Housing Trust.

Press expertise

I can talk about the UK’s housing crisis.

My book launched on October 18 2023 - Applying a Systems Thinking Approach to the Construction Industry.

Written in an 'accessible and easy to read style' - Routledge's words, not mine - it builds off my recent PhD research into the barriers to innovation in volume housebuilding, and where we really need to start if we're ever going to fix our housing industry's many problems.

It's in two distinct parts, with Part 2 running through the solutions a Systems Thinking approach throws up and crucially, how we would need to go about implementing them.
