Role
As the module leader for Illustration in Context 1, I give HE4 students their first experience of research and critical thinking at HE-level study and, through a programme of lectures, seminars and practical workshops, introduce them to ideas and concepts that are designed to help them to develop their practice and prepare them for HE5 and HE6. My work on DiC2 and DiC3 is focused on supporting students as they work towards the research and production of their final year dissertations.
Career overview
I have worked at a number of HE institutions, contributing to teaching in a wide range of subject areas across art and design and the social sciences, including photography, film, media, cultural studies, and media and leisure industries. I am an assessor and course author and have produced teaching materials for a wide range of learners, both within and outside mainstream education.
My teaching work has been in parallel with a career as an artist, curator and creative director. My creative practice encompasses film, photography, music, experimental sound, and walking-as-practice. My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and included in the collections of public art galleries. Another strand of my practice has often taken its lead from my work as a teaching academic and has been focused on supporting and developing the creative activities of others.
Research areas
In recent years, I have been producing a body of work that explores the aftermath of the UK’s extractive industries, self-publishing a number of publications and developing a series of site-specific activities and interventions.
