During his doctoral research, he held several Research Associate positions and subsequently served as a Post-Doctoral Researcher. His research focused on exploring design opportunities and applications within 3D printing, contributing valuable insights to the field.

His academic career began at De Montfort University, where he assumed the role of SeniorLecturer in the Faculty of Art & Design, and program leader for Product Design. Subsequently, he returned to Loughborough University, joining the Design School. Here, he undertook various leadership roles, including Director of Studies, where he played a central role in academic administration and oversight.

In 2019, he rejoined De Montfort University as a Professor of Design and took on the responsibilities of Director of the Design Unit. Research areas

Professor Guy Bingham pioneered research in 3D printed textiles and investigated many topics within the research field, including: design, design tools, 3D modelling strategies, materials, optimisation and specific applications of high-performance, body armour, medical, smart and fashion. His work within 3D printed fashion was nominated for a FutureTextile Award (2017 Finalists, 3D Fashion project).

Professor Guy Bingham was Principal Investigator for Impacting Business by Designprogramme (IBbD) – a large £4.65mil multi-institutional project funded by Research England. This innovation/research project required strategic leadership of a large (20+) team of academics and researchers across three, UK universities, working with a portfolio of over 200 SMEs. This leadership role also required consideration of risk management, managing extensive budgets and the careful delivery of established KPIs. The remit of IBbD was to reduce SME risk in New Product Development within England and this required establishing a range of strategic partnerships, locally and nationally.
