Role
As the Course Leader for the MA in Filmmaking, Dr Lars Koens works with students to challenge and innovate the medium of film through technology and critical thinking. He constantly develops and plans the course to align with these ambitions. At the centre of MA Filmmaking sits the module Film Experiments, which consists of lectures and workshops where alternative approaches to moving image practice are discovered. This culminates in the MISE Festival misefestival.com, led by the MA in Filmmaking. Furthermore, he lectures on Experimental Film for undergraduate filmmaking students and is module leader for the optional module Sound Art & Design. Prior to this, he was year 3 leader of the BA (Hons) in Filmmaking and Life Drawing tutor.
Career overview
Dr Lars Koens has a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and worked as a postdoctoral research assistant to explore the evolution of objects over time and in space. He then freelanced as a filmmaker, artist, and sound designer, enjoying recognition with awards, screenings, and exhibitions at national and international festivals. He first started teaching part-time at the Edinburgh College of Art, and at Liverpool John Moores University.
Research areas
The research underlying Lars’ teaching and art practice is centred around ecological discourse, leading to work in a variety of themes, such as objecthood in moving image practice, environmental documentary, and non-human agency in contemporary dance. Recently, the feature-length documentary Wolf Park, for which he is sound recordist, sound designer, and music composer, was showcased at Festival de Cannes.
