Role
Nathan is a Lecturer for the NTU School of Art & Design, Nottingham Trent University. He leads and delivers contextual studies modules, primarily for BA (Hons) Animation. His role has included re-writing assessment briefs and rubrics for Animation Studies modules, as well as reshaping how animation history, visual media theory and cultural representation inform the course content.
Career overview
Nathan has a varied professional background, ranging from Widening Access outreach programmes in schools to supporting adults in mental health recovery. Alongside this, he has delivered freelance commissions in digital design and short-form animation.
External activity
Nathan concurrently runs his own award-winning, creativity-driven business, Mental Roots, which delivers workshops, commissions and courses that promote mental wellbeing and creative expression for ethnically diverse communities. This includes teaching teenagers and young adults the basics of animation, and showing how the medium can be used as a therapeutic outlet and a tool to empower others’ wellbeing.

Nathan’s animation has previously been sponsored by the BBC and Rural Media. He has also partnered with the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), acting as a competition judge and ceremony guest speaker for their Student Design Awards. More recently, he has collaborated with CICs and larger organisations that intersect creative and performing arts with youth engagement and social issues, including the BFI, Freedom Foundation CIC and Rural Media.

Nathan has shared his expertise and work with a range of press outlets. His Mental Roots animation and brand have been featured through interviews on BBC Radio Derby, a viral postgraduate marketing campaign for the University of Derby, and articles in outlets such as The British Blacklist and Mojatu.
