Department of Management

Role

Hasan joined the Department of Management at Nottingham Business School in July 2024. Previously, he held academic appointments (2014—2024) at University College London (UCL), Royal Holloway - University of London, University of Northampton, and University of Bath. Over the past 10 years, he has taught research methods, organisational behaviour, business ethics and sustainability to students from UG to PhD level.

Hasan studied Environmental Sustainability (fully funded PhD as Dean’s Scholar, Pass with No Corrections) at Royal Holloway - University of London, Applied Research in Social Sciences (ESRC-recognised MRes, with Distinction) at University of Stirling, and International Business Economics (MSc, with Distinction) at University of Dundee. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Skills of Teaching to Inspire Learning (PGCHE, with Commendation) and a Postgraduate Certificate in PhD Degree Supervision (PGCert).

Career overview

Prior to joining academia in 2014, Hasan worked in industry in the UK and abroad. From 2009 to 2010, he was employed by a European consultancy firm operating in Bangladesh, where he helped businesses become more sustainable, profitable, and socially responsible. His role involved consulting local manufacturing units on sustainable practices. During this time, he and his colleagues conducted extensive fieldwork, which led to the publication of the first-ever bilingual sustainability guidebook for local entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, titled ‘A CSR Guide for Entrepreneurs and Factory Managers’.

Between 2010 and 2014, Hasan worked as a freelance writer and researcher for international business magazines and research think tanks. He wrote reports, articles, and reviews on critical issues in sustainability. He also worked as Marketing and PR Officer for a textile company in the Scottish Borders.

Research areas

Hasan’s research is interdisciplinary. He draws on insights from (environmental) sociology, psychology, management, and development studies fields to understand how organisations (private, public and third sector) and governments (national and local) respond to the ‘wicked’ sustainability challenges in different institutional contexts. His most recent research works have primarily focussed on three areas: (environmental) sustainability and ethics in small-scale businesses in developing countries, challenges of cross-disciplinary research in academia, and integration of public and planetary health outcomes in urban development practice.

Hasan’s work has informed policies in the UK and abroad and has been published in well-known journals such as ‘Journal of Management Inquiry’, 'Environmental Sociology', ‘Local Environment’, ‘Journal of Urban Affairs’, ‘Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility’ (formerly ‘Business Ethics: A European Review’), ‘Futures’, ‘Health & Place’, ‘International Journal of Qualitative Methods’, ‘Cities & Health’, among others, and in books edited by leading scholars in sustainability and business ethics.

Hasan received numerous awards and funding for research excellence, such as the ‘Dean’s Scholar’ award from Royal Holloway, University of London; 'Most Cited Paper' award from the journal ‘Business Strategy & Development’; ‘Santander Universities Research Grant’; ‘Helen Shackleton Fund’; ‘CSR Management Scholarship’ from HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration; 'Research Development Fund' (twice) from University of Northampton; and 'PhD Scholarship' from University of Manchester.

Hasan is Associate Editor of ‘Environment, Development and Sustainability’ (Springer) - an international, multidisciplinary journal covering all aspects of the environmental impacts of socio-economic development. Previously, he was Associate Editor (2017-2021) of ‘Annual Review of Social Partnerships’ (Routledge) - a practitioner journal that aims to bridge academic theory and practice with ideas about promoting the social good. He also reviews for other leading journals on an ad-hoc basis.

External activity

Hasan is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE UK (SFHEA). He has experience in leading modules and curriculum development, from undergraduate to PhD levels. Previously, he worked as Academic Director (equivalent to Reader) at a Welsh public university where he line-managed 40 full time and part time academics (lecturers, senior lecturers and programme managers), oversaw 6 academic programmes, and led the development of an interdisciplinary research forum.

Hasan is External Reviewer for selected MSc programmes at University of Exeter and External Examiner for selected MSc programmes at De Montfort University. He is also a Visiting Academic in Research Methods at University of Warwick. He has supervised PhD students, and he regularly serves as External Examiner for PhDs at public research universities in the UK.
