Role

Dr Symeon Dionysis is a Research Fellow in FinTech at the Centre for Finance, Technology and Society. His research focuses on consumer interaction with and adoption of financial technologies, including, but not limited to blockchain and distributed systems, central bank digital currencies as well as trust in fintech applications. He also supervises PhD students at the centre.

Career overview

Symeon holds degrees in psychology (BSc), economic and consumer behaviour (MSc) and received his PhD in Digital Economy from the University of Nottingham (EPSRC studentship) in 2022. His multidisciplinary research has focused on the interactions between the economy, society, and the individual, as well as the mechanisms underlining people’s choices in the digital world, including academic and commercial projects on the effects of financial crises on social-emotional development, social dilemmas in anticommons settings and design research on pension management digital platforms. For his PhD dissertation, Symeon explored the adoption of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies for supply chain management and product traceability both from the perspective of industry decision makers as well as in terms of consumer perception and preferences.

Prior to joining Nottingham Trent University, Symeon worked as a behavioural science consultant for Caja Ltd, a business transformation consultancy based at Keele University Park. In this role, he actively participated in and led various projects, including designing, implementing, and evaluating behavioural change interventions. Additionally, he conducted behavioural and design research and provided workforce and executive training in behavioural science to diverse clients, such as local and central government, NHS trusts, universities, and the private sector.

External activity

Symeon has served, since 2022, as a reviewer for the ACM Journal Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction. For his research, he has also partnered with organisations such as the Digital Catapult and the Digital Pound Foundation.

He is also a trustee for the Nottingham based Inspire Foundation, a charity working on bring together and integrate new and established communities through cultural and educational workshops, events, and activities with a particular focus on STEM fields and young people from disadvantaged and potentially vulnerable backgrounds.
