Dr Thao Nguyen - MSc, PhD, PGCHE, FHEA is Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at Nottingham Trent University. Thao is supervisor, internal moderator and personal tutor at undergraduate, master, and doctorate levels.

Career overview

Before joining Nottingham Trent University, Thao had worked 4 years in the banking sector as the Head of International Settlement Department. He completed his MSc in Banking and Finance in 2007 and a PhD in Finance in 2012 in London (Viva without correction).

He is a member of Nottingham Trent University Research Ethics Committee and Nottingham Business School Reconsideration Panel. Thao received NBS Award for the most improved module (Investment and Portfolio Management in 2022-23 academic year). His current teaching is in Corporate Finance (Module leader – MSc); Investment and Portfolio Management (Module leader - MSc); Valuation and Investment Products (MSc).

Research areas

Thao’s research focuses on theoretical and empirical issues of bank/firm competition, efficiency, and risk management. His research also encompasses climate change. He is the author of several publications on banking and finance. He has been a referee for the journals such as the Journal of Applied Accounting Research; Research in International Business and Finance, and Emerging Market Finance and Trade. Dr. Thao Nguyen has 2 DBA student completions and currently supervises 1 PhD student. Thao welcomes PhD candidates in the field of banking/firm performance, risk, and efficiency; and climate change. Thao is the Co-Chair for IFMB 2024 conference (Contemporary Issues in Financial Markets and Banking). He has been on the organizing committee of IFMB 2023 conference.

External activity

Thao is visiting lecturer in Ipag Business School, Paris, France; Stockholm Business School, Stockholm, Sweden; University of Nottingham, UK and Universidad Loyola Andalucia, Seville, Spain. Thao was also external examiner at University of Sunderland, UK (2014-2018) and University of Hertfordshire, UK (2017-2021).

Recently, Thao joined a Taskforce group (AVSE Global) to provide Policy brief consultations to the Office of Vietnamese Prime Minister.

Thao has been successfully granted the funding amount of £90,000 - The Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) programme's Flexible Research Fund (FRF) for the project titled "Macroeconomic Implications of Transitions to Low-Carbon Energy in Vietnam" – duration 15-18 months from 2024-25.
