Role

Tom specialises in building strong internal partnerships through highly collaborative practices. He is responsible for the academic standards and quality aspect of the relationship with NTU in Mansfield, the long-standing strategic partnership with Nottingham Trent International College (NTIC) and Pearson, with whom the University has formed a partnership to expand its technical education offer. Tom supports Schools, partners and Professional Services by leading, coordinating, and advising on quality assurance activities. A key area of focus is the expansion of Higher National qualifications (HNC and HND) and Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) at NTU.

Tom is the Executive Officer for the Mansfield Standards and Quality Sub-Committee (MSQSC) and the Joint Academic Advisory Board (JAAB).

Career overview

Tom began a career in Higher Education at NTU in Academic Registry as an Administrator over 10 years ago. He was promoted to a Coordinator role overseeing the Student Records Team. During his time in Academic Registry he led a project to implement a new verification system, HEDD, that is still used by NTU to verify NTU awards.

Tom’s move towards academic quality began during his role as NTU Doctoral School Coordinator. Having developed a proven track record of enhancing process and quality management mechanisms, he moved to the Centre for Academic Development and Quality (CADQ) in June 2020.

In CADQ, Tom has continued his work to embed quality enhancement mechanisms and has built strong relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders. His work has seen the implementation of a new committee for the Mansfield provision that he continues to support as Executive and Link Officer. He works with a broad range of stakeholders and advises on the academic standards and quality of the NTIC provision to ensure course alignment for students transitioning on agreed Progression Routes.

Research areas

Tom has recently undertaken initial research into the impact of course design features of courses in NTU in Mansfield. This impact analysis will continue for the next 3 years. He has a particular interest in the application of course design features and how individually and collectively they impact on the student learning experience and outcomes.

External activity

Tom leads on the Midlands Credit Compass, a credit exchange framework that supports credit mobility between eight Universities in the Midlands that form Midlands Enterprise Universities.
