Role

John provides academic leadership, strategic and operational management for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Secondary and PCET Initial Teacher Education.  He leads, undertakes and supports programme development and scholarly activity within Secondary and PCET Education and across the Institute.

Career overview

Having trained in Nottingham as an English and RE teacher, John spent 10 years teaching in secondary schools in South Yorkshire and the East Midlands before joining NTU in 2007. During this time he held a wide variety of curriculum and pastoral roles, culminating in the deputy headship of a large secondary comprehensive. He holds the National Professional Qualification for Headship. And he has served as both a staff governor and community governor.

Research areas

John’s research interests focus on trainee teachers’ professional practice. He has investigated induction practices for trainee teachers. And he is currently undertaking collaborative research into trainees’ professional identity.

External activity

John is an external examiner for the University of Huddersfield’s range of Secondary ITE programmes.
