Career overview

Dr Peace Onawumi is an academic and industry expert with extensive industrial experience in dynamic and vibration in machine tools and aerospace structures. Currently working at Nottingham Trent University as a Lecturer in the Aerospace Department.

Dr Peace Onawumi earned an MEng (Hons) in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Salford and completed her PhD in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University. She is a chartered engineer specializing in dynamics and vibration, machining modelling, simulation and optimization, control systems, process monitoring, and automated systems development. Her work focuses on understanding the dynamics of machine tools, workpieces, and aerospace structures, and she collaborates with aerospace industry partners as a consultant.

Her PhD research investigated ultrasonically assisted machining (UAM) processes used in aerospace (CFRP/Ti) stack materials and introduced vibration controls in the machining process. During this time, she also explored how UAM can enhance machining quality in advanced materials, such as natural fiber-reinforced polymers (NFRP), metal matrix composites (MMC), rocks, and marble, aiming to eliminate damage that occurs during the machining process.

After completing her doctoral studies, Peace became a project engineer at the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in 2019, where she focused on machining dynamics and working as a consultant for industrial partners. She was involved in developing models and researching optimization techniques for machining processes. As a research associate, she developed an on-machine broaching system as part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with Seco Tools, where she created mechanistic and dynamic models to predict outcomes for both traditional and on-machine broaching processes. She eventually advanced to Technical Lead in 2022, emphasizing the dynamics of robotic machining in milling processes and further optimizing these operations.
