Jayne Brown is Professor of Health Care Professions, Director for the Centre for Public and Psychosocial Health in the School of Social Sciences and Research Capacity lead for the Institute of Health and Allied Professions.

Career overview

Jayne is a nurse by background who worked clinically in Emergency Care and Community Nursing before joining the University of Sheffield as a Lecturer in Nursing. Subsequently she worked at Glasgow Caledonian University as a Senior Research Fellow before returning south of the border to take up a similar role at the University of Nottingham. This was followed by ten years as Professor of Nursing at De Montfort University Leicester before joining NTU as Professor of Health Care Professions in June 2022.

Research areas

Professor Brown’s research is focused on developing nursing practice in all its forms. She has worked in the areas of gerontological nursing, family carer research, nurses’ role in the use of continuous sedation prior to death. However, more recently her work has focused on perinatal mental health and developing practice in Health Visiting. Her work is clinically and theoretically driven. Professor Brown has a reputation for mentorship and successful PhD supervision of NHS staff.

External activity

Professor Brown is a visiting Chair at the University of Northampton and De Montfort University. She is a member of the East Midlands Research for Patient Benefit Funding Committee and has reviewed proposals for organisations such as the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR), the General Nursing Council Trust, Marie Curie, and BUPA. She has sat of NIHR ethics committees and undertakes the role of publication reviewer across a range of publications including Ageing and Society, International Journal of Palliative Care, British Journal of Nursing and BMC Nursing.
