Kerry Lemon

Senior Lecturer

School of Social Sciences

Role

I am a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Work, Care and Community, with a cross-course teaching and coordination remit spanning Youth Work, Social Work, and Childhood and Youth programmes.

I lead and contribute to modules on child and adolescent development, inclusive practice, and working with young people. I support students across disciplines through personal tutoring and seminar leadership, and contribute to school-wide initiatives focused on ethics, public engagement, and academic support.

Career overview

My academic career spans further and higher education, with extensive experience in curriculum design, course leadership, and teaching across early years, youth, and community-based programmes.

I have held teaching and leadership roles at Nottingham Trent University, West Nottinghamshire College, and NCG Newcastle College, consistently contributing to the development of inclusive, values-led education.

My teaching practice is grounded in applied theory, critical reflection, and a strong commitment to student empowerment and professional development.

Research areas

My research and scholarly interests focus on inclusive practice, practitioner development, and the intersection of care, education, and social justice. I am particularly interested in pedagogical approaches that connect theory to practice, and in the ways values, identity, and reflection shape professionals working with children, young people, and families. I also explore themes of belonging, wellbeing, and ethical practice within youth and community education.

External activity

I am an External Examiner for collaborative provision at the University of Cumbria and University of Wales Trinity Saint David, supporting quality assurance in programmes related to health, social care, and working with children and families.

I also act as an academic mentor for NTU Global’s European Towns Challenge and lead a School working group on Public Engagement in the Curriculum.

My external work reflects my commitment to collaboration, standards in education, and the development of the children and young people’s workforce.
