Lorna Wilson-Shorten

Meet our School Liaison Officer

Our aim is to raise awareness of and promote careers in the animal, equine or land-based industries through a number of activities. These include in-school careers events, careers assemblies, interactive sessions, tours and experience days onsite at Brackenhurst. The sessions we deliver aim to enthuse and inform young people, helping them to make informed decisions about their future and make a successful transition to further and higher education.

Lorna Wilson-Shorten is our School Liaison Officer and will be the main point of contact for Further Education activity.

"I bring a unique aspect to the role as I previously studied at Brackenhurst, for my College and University degree! I therefore have a personal understanding to the range of courses available and what its really like to be a student on such a beautiful campus. Brack has been my home for several years now so I am very excited to promote and share that experience to prospective students all across the UK."

Our offer

  • Careers events

We can attend your careers event and provide information about Brackenhurst’s courses to your students and their parents. The types of events that we have supported in the past include: Careers Fairs, Networking Events, Parents' Evenings, Mock Interviews. We will represent the College (FE) and University (HE) courses but with a focus on raising awareness of future opportunities and careers in the animal, equine or land-based industries.

  • Subject specific careers talks

We can deliver engaging careers education talks at your school. These help students to consider where specific subject areas can take them in the future. Linked with the courses offered at Brackenhurst Campus we currently have talks on:

    • Careers in the Environmental and Animal Sectors
    • Careers in Animal Science
    • Careers in Conservation and Wildlife

Delivery times are flexible (between 30 – 60 minutes) and can be delivered to a small group or assembly style.

If you're interested in a subject area that isn't listed above then please get in touch to discuss further.

  • Brackenhurst college course taster days

Each July we welcome regional schools to bring a group of Year 10 students and spend a day with us.

During the day students will get to spend time exploring our beautiful campus and getting a hands-on feel for the subjects they could study with us.

Our taster days are completely free of charge. All you need to do is get your group to and from us on the day.

We can accommodate group sizes of up to 15 students plus accompanying members of staff. As group sizes are limited we recommend bringing along students who would really benefit from spending a day at Brackenhurst. Particularly those that enjoy science subjects and are exploring careers options.

Spaces will be limited so please register your interest early.

  • Degree-level experience days

We run a range of interactive, subject specific days for college and sixth form students to come along to. These will give you an insight into what it’s like to study a certain subject at Brackenhurst Campus and will give your students something extra to mention in their personal statement. Upcoming dates are currently to be confirmed.

  • Campus tours

Bring a group of students for a tour around the Brackenhurst Campus. Tours last for around one hour and will visit key areas of the campus.

As we show you around we’ll also talk about our courses and entry requirements.

The maximum number of students we can accommodate on a tour is fifteen.

  • Open days

We welcome school and college groups to attend our general open days throughout the year.

Please check our open day page for the latest dates and to book your place.
