Livery at NTU

We offer a limited number of student liveries so you can bring your horse with you to NTU.

DIY livery at Brackenhurst Equestrian Centre

Equestrian Centre at Brackenhurst

DIY livery is available to students studying and living at or in close proximity to the Brackenhurst Campus. Priority is given to year one students studying on equine courses, with applications from other years and subject areas considered if/when spaces become available.

Mary King indoor arena

NTU's Equestrian Centre boasts extensive facilities

Facilities

You will have access to all the equestrian centre facilities, including:

  • Indoor and outdoor schools
  • Research arena
  • Horse walker
  • Round pen
  • Weighbridge.

We have two yards for liveries; both are Harlow Box yards that are situated right next to the indoor school on the main yard. Each yard has a tack room and each stable has a tack locker allocated to it in the tack room. There is a 6-arm rug drier allocated to each livery yard and a wash box for all liveries. A network of public bridleways also surrounds Brackenhurst.

We do our best to offer daily turnout throughout the year, weather permitting. Spaces are allocated according to what paddock space we have available. Mares and geldings have separate paddocks and once we have found groups of horses that are happy together, we try not to change them. It may sometimes be necessary for the yard manager to limit access to grazing to avoid long term damage to the clay land. Should this action become necessary time is allocated to you for loose schooling your horse in the research arena and for using the horse walker and round pens.

DIY Livery booking form

Places are limited and applications are accepted, however not guaranteed, on a first come, first served basis. Individual cases for having more than one horse will be considered if space permits. You may be put on a waiting list if all spaces are filled. Livery places are only offered to those that choose NTU as their first choice university and if applicable, those who have paid a deposit to secure NTU Brackenhurst accommodation.

Stables need to be reapplied for each year, even if you are already a livery client.

Please see full information in our livery service agreement and livery code of practice.

All of the horses settled into the livery yard quickly and it always has a calm aura with an organised set-up that works well for both owners and horses alike.

Important notes

  • We cannot accommodate stallions/colts or horses that are not backed/broken in at present
  • Horses exposed to high risk infection situations such as shared transport, long travel times, travel from outside the UK (including NI), travel from areas with known infection (such as but not limited to; flu, strangles, EVA etc.) will be required to isolate on arrival for a minimum of two weeks
  • Horses must be fully vaccinated against the equine influenza virus and we currently require horses to be vaccinated every 12 months whilst liveried on NTU premises but this may be subject to change
  • We are a yard that is part of the Redwings Horse Sanctuary Stamp Out Strangles Scheme. Your horse must therefore have a negative Strangles test before arrival. You will receive more details about this if offered a place
  • Horses can stay during Christmas and Easter holidays or go home depending on your preference. However, all horses have to leave at the end of the summer term (May/June time) as we then steam clean and paint all of the stables ready for the next academic year and livery intake
  • If a horse is temporarily or permanently removed from the University’s livery facilities under any circumstance, there shall be no entitlement to a refund or suspension of the charges and the customer will still be liable for full payment of the livery provision annual fee.
