I am very grateful for the four years I have spent at NTU, it has hosted invaluable experiences, and I will look back on the fond memories for years to come.
More about Dervla
Why did you choose to study at NTU?
I chose to study at NTU due to completing the FdSc Veterinary Nursing degree in 2023. I enrolled for the BSc here due to the favourable modules and familiarity of the environment/staff. NTU hosts fantastic facilities, both academic and recreational.
What did you learn – both inside and outside of lectures?
Studying at NTU allowed me to become more independent and develop my communication and time management skills. I was encouraged to research independent, and recent literature surrounding keen interests. I joined both NTU’s netball and equestrian teams and enjoyed the regular training and competitions, as well as the social events. During my Top-Up year at NTU, I had the opportunity to work towards and successfully achieve my AFHEA.
What have you been up to since graduating?
Since graduating, I have been working in a busy first opinion, and referral, veterinary hospital as a clinical Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). I am also a clinical supervisor and support students through their veterinary nursing training.
What does your current day involve?
I currently work full-time as a Clinical Registered Veterinary Nurse performing schedule 3 procedures, inpatient nursing, anaesthesia, laboratory work, conducting consultations, as well as surgical nursing. I support student veterinary nurses with both theory and practical skills as a clinical supervisor.
What attracted you to this field?
I was driven to this field by my passion for animal welfare. I completed my work experience at a local veterinary hospital which fuelled my passion and influenced my career choice significantly.
What have been the highlights and biggest challenges of your career so far?
There have been many highlights of my career so far including graduating with my Top-Up degree having furthered my knowledge and expanded my skillset, as well as becoming a clinical supervisor - it is a very rewarding role. Challenges in my career so far have been minimal, and I have enjoyed my career path.
What are your plans for the future?
I have a trip to Zimbabwe scheduled for the summer of 2025 to volunteer with wildlife veterinarians, aiding them with diagnostics and surgical procedures, as well as preventative medicine. I am also returning to NTU as an examiner for the VN practical exams. I aim to complete further study in the near future and gain a certificate in advanced veterinary nursing.
Finally, is there anything else you’d like to share with our student and alumni community?
I am very grateful for the four years I have spent at NTU, it has hosted invaluable experiences, and I will look back on the fond memories for years to come.
