More about Elli
Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?
Among the various universities I applied to, I selected NTU due to its emphasis on practical learning and the valuable opportunity to undertake a placement year, enhancing both experience and qualifications.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
The lecturers provide numerous opportunities for students to enhance their knowledge and practical experience with horses beyond the classroom setting.
How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying?
The modules are engaging and offer comprehensive coverage of the subject matter. While they incorporate numerous practical and enjoyable elements, successful participation often requires significant independent study outside of scheduled lectures. I went to University to learn about the scientific knowledge to later become an equine chiropractor. But I've been really fascinated by learning about horse behaviour. What I've learned has made me understand a lot more about the things that affect how horses behave and there welfare.
What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?
There are many facilities that we use on the course, we use the indoor school and the technical room the most. In the technical room, there is a mechanical horse, different types of tack, monitors that can be used on the horses and a life size skeleton of a horse.
What do you think about Brackenhurst Campus? What do you get up to in your spare time?
The campus is a bit limited with activities and other facilities due to the nature of the courses held on the campus. There is more societies and sports being added to the campus but its difficult for the campus to keep sports and societies going because of the lack of students on the campus. There are buses that come every half hour to an hour for transport into the city and into Southwell which allows you access to activities and sports in the city. There are many walks around the campus and footpaths into Southwell.
Personally, in my spare time I spend it in the library or in the café for lunch and revision. I also go to the gym during the day. In the evening, I go to my friend's yard with her and see her horses.
What is your top tip for someone considering studying/living at Brackenhurst Campus?
My top tip for considering Brackenhurst campus is to thoroughly explore all your options before making a decision. Don't just limit yourself to the campus and halls. Take the bus into Southwell and the city centre, and explore both areas with your family or friends you feel comfortable with. This will give you a better understanding of your surroundings and the opportunities available to you before making any commitments.
Have you been involved in any placements, work experience or volunteering as part of your course? If so, what did you do and what did you achieve?
Not yet but I'm currently in the process of planning a placement year working with horses around the world.
Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?
I highly recommend this course for several reasons, but one of the most significant is the exceptional quality of teaching. The lecturers possess a wealth of knowledge and experience, and their ability to connect course material to real-world stories makes learning and remembering the concepts incredibly engaging.
What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has/ will help you to achieve that goal?
I plan to pursue a Master's degree in Equine Chiropractic. This course provides me with the foundational knowledge necessary to pursue a career in this field
Any additional comments?
The lecturers have gone above and beyond to assist me in securing the extra support I require for my dyslexia, removing any previous barriers to my learning
