One of the things I enjoy most about the course is the model making and puppetry elements. Through a live project with Ding Foundation, I was able to make props, watch rehearsals and observe puppet manipulation.

More about Suwoo

What made you choose NTU?
“I chose to study at NTU because I had originally been looking for a design course in my home country and this wasn’t available. However, NTU offered the course and I thought it would be a great opportunity, considering it has been running for over 40 years and offers good connections to industry and companies.

“I also found Nottingham to be a good city to study in as, for a student, everything you need is close and convenient.”

What do you enjoy most about studying Theatre Design?
“One of the things I enjoy most about the course is the model making and puppetry elements. Through a live project with Ding Foundation, I was able to make props, watch rehearsals and observe puppet manipulation. My interest in puppetry meant that these opportunities were great for me!”

Has the course included any speakers or lecturers from industry?
“I have had the chance to listen to many speakers from industry throughout the course. One of my favourite visits from industry was when Steven, an expert of masks came and delivered a mask session which involved the class making their own masks for a chosen character from Ash Girl.”

Have you completed any work placements throughout the course?
“I completed my first placement with Bamboozle, a Leicester based Theatre Company. Through this placement, I was able to make a puppet that was taken into a workshop delivered at schools. I also experienced carrying out repairs for props and puppets. I’m sure the skills I’ve developed through this placement will be useful in the future.”

How do you find the course staff?
“The course staff are all very supportive and full of passion. They are happy to invest extra time to talk through ideas and provide additional help. As an international student I always feel as though I can talk to them if I have any concerns.”

How do you find the facilities at NTU?
“The facilities for Theatre Design students are great; we have our own desks in the studio with space keep our model boxes. This is great, as we do not need to bring our model boxes in to University every day. The workshop is a welcoming space for students, and the staff and technical team are always on hand to help with any problems.

“The campus has a number of other great facilities for art and design students, ranging from Bonington Gallery and the art shop. The Students’ Union is also very relaxing and useful during your time at university.”

Would you recommend the course to others?
“I would recommend the course to others as we have ambitious tutors, and everyone linked to the course is very supportive and approachable.”
