More about Marnie

MA Museum and Heritage Development student, Marnie Shell tells us more about why she chose her course and NTU, her experience on placement, and the support she has received from tutors while studying.

Why did you choose to study Museum and Heritage Development at NTU and were there any key features which may have influenced your decision?

I had always wanted a career in Museums and Heritage but was unsure how to begin. I started looking at Masters courses and soon found Nottingham Trent. I was drawn to how practical the course was, with so many opportunities for experience in the field. I also liked the idea of the course being such a creative one, with students from all backgrounds, be it History or Design, being catered for.

What support have you received while studying, from tutors colleagues and/or mentors?

My tutors have been incredibly supportive and understanding of my needs, both as a student with a chronic illness and as a part-time student who works alongside studying. Kat, Charlie and Rebekah have always given me extra time to complete work and helped me catch-up when hospital appointments and illness have prevented me from attending sessions. I always feel supported by them.

How would you describe your experience of studying at Nottingham Trent University?

I have loved every minute of it. The course is innovative and inspiring, giving plenty of practical experience as well as opportunities to explore your own interests and ideas.

Clifton Campus where I studied is so compact and friendly, it makes new students feel very welcome.  And of course, Nottingham is such an amazing city to study in, vibrant, creative and fun!

Did you go on any kind of work placement? If so, what did you do? How was this placement arranged? Did it affect your career plans? What have you learned about yourself?

I did a placement with the Learning and Interpretation team at Leicester Museums, assisting their summer holiday scheme at Abbey Pumping Station and the National Space Centre. My tutor Charlie made the initial contact with the team and then handed over to me to make the arrangements. As well as being really enjoyable, it provided me with valuable hands-on experience within the field and a greater understanding of how museums are run. I also found it gave me a lot of confidence in my own abilities.

Is there anything else you would like to say that you feel might be relevant to someone thinking about enrolling on your course?

Before I started this course, I felt stuck and as though my desired career could never be achieved. Now, I feel completely differently. Not only has this course given me the knowledge and skills necessary to have a successful career in the Museums and Heritage sector, it has given me confidence and opened my eyes to all the available opportunities in the field.
