Why NTU?
Why did you choose NTU and your course?
I chose NTU because, after thoroughly researching university rankings and the best institutions for project management, NTU consistently came out on top. Its strong reputation and comprehensive course structure were key factors in my decision. Throughout the programme, I discovered that NTU provides not only academic excellence but also valuable industry exposure and networking opportunities.
I’ve always been passionate about management and making a difference through leadership. In my previous roles, I found myself naturally gravitating towards organising teams and streamlining processes, which sparked my interest in project management. While I didn’t have formal experience in this field initially, the course gave me the perfect platform to develop the necessary skills. Now, having completed the programme last year, I’m working as an Assistant Project Manager, and the knowledge I gained at NTU has been crucial in helping me navigate real-world challenges. It’s been an exciting journey, and I’m grateful I chose this path to restart my career.
What stood out about Nottingham Business School?
What stood out about Nottingham Business School was the balance between academic rigor and practical application. The hands-on learning approach provided opportunities to work on real-world projects and case studies directly aligned with industry challenges. NBS’s strong ties to leading businesses ensured we were exposed to relevant scenarios and best practices. Through guest lectures, internships, and consultancy projects, I gained valuable insights into the realities of project management, going beyond theory to apply what I learned in real settings.
Lastly, the Business School’s emphasis on ethics and sustainability was something I really valued. In today’s business world, understanding how to balance profitability with responsible management is critical, and NBS does a great job of embedding these principles into the curriculum.
What was your favourite thing about the course?
My favourite thing about the course was the innovative approach to learning, which was unlike anything I had experienced before. Rather than relying solely on lectures and textbooks, the program emphasised practical application, with a strong focus on real-world projects, case studies, and collaborative group work. This hands-on method of learning not only made the content more engaging but also helped me build confidence in applying theoretical knowledge to actual business scenarios.
Did you have the option to personalise your course? How did it benefit your studies?
Yes, I had the option to personalise my course, particularly towards the end when we could choose between a consultancy experience project (CEP), a dissertation, or an individual project. I chose the consultancy experience project because I wanted to gain firsthand insight into working in a real project environment. This option was incredibly beneficial to my studies, as it allowed me to apply the theoretical knowledge I’d gained throughout the course to real-world business challenges.
Working directly with a company on a live project not only gave me valuable industry exposure but also helped me understand the practicalities of project management, such as managing stakeholders, team dynamics, and handling complex project issues. In fact, this experience was pivotal, as it directly led to my employment with Colas as an Assistant Project Manager, where I now continue to build on the skills I developed during the course.
Can you tell us a bit about your placement? How did it benefit you?
As an international student, I was initially quite anxious about moving away from my family and friends, and leaving behind a well-paying job to pursue my master’s degree was a big decision. However, securing my placement was a turning point for me. It reinforced my belief in the path I’d chosen and gave me confidence that I didn’t need to doubt myself or my decisions.
The placement itself was a valuable learning experience. It provided exposure to project management, allowing me to apply the skills I had learned during the course in a professional environment. I’ve always enjoyed managing things, and being in a role where I get to do that daily has been both rewarding and challenging. It’s been a journey of growth, both professionally and personally, and I’m constantly learning and evolving in my role.
Rather than relying solely on lectures and textbooks, the programme emphasised practical application, with a strong focus on real-world projects, case studies, and collaborative group work.
You now...
What does a typical day for you involve?
As an Assistant Project Manager, my typical day involves a blend of key activities that keep me engaged and focused. I start by looking at the calendar so that I can plan ahead for the day (and a cup of tea!), followed by reviewing project updates and preparing for team meetings where we discuss progress, challenges, and priorities. I manage timelines and track task progress using project management tools to ensure everything stays on schedule. Communicating with clients and stakeholders for updates, feedback, and clarifications is essential, and I also tackle unexpected challenges through problem-solving. Documentation plays a crucial role in maintaining transparency and accountability, while I actively seek opportunities for learning and development by collaborating with colleagues. In my current project, flexibility is essential due to the demanding nature of the work on certain days. I consider this adaptability my secret weapon, as it allows me to navigate unexpected challenges and shifting priorities with ease.
What attracted you to your line of work?
Honestly, I think it's the thrill of being the person who keeps all the plates spinning without dropping them (most of the time). I’ve always had a love for organising chaos—whether it’s planning a trip with indecisive friends or trying to meet tight deadlines at work. It’s like being a puzzle master, but with more emails and the occasional mild panic. Plus, there's something satisfying about ticking things off a to-do list, even if the list magically gets longer by the minute! I enjoy the responsibility of overseeing a project’s journey from planning to completion and knowing that my work directly contributes to its success. It’s a dynamic field that constantly keeps me on my toes, which is exactly what I was looking for in my career.
What challenges have you faced?
One of the key challenges I’ve faced as an Assistant Project Manager is managing competing priorities and tight deadlines, particularly in my current project, which involves a collaborative partnership between Liverpool City Council, Colas, and various industry partners. Balancing stakeholder expectations while ensuring that the project stays on track can be quite demanding. Additionally, adapting to different communication styles within such diverse teams has posed its own challenges, requiring a great deal of flexibility and patience to keep everyone aligned.
Another significant hurdle has been maintaining composure under pressure, especially when dealing with delays or resource constraints. However, navigating these challenges has greatly enhanced my ability to think on my feet, improved my communication skills, and reinforced the importance of being adaptable and composed, even when under pressure.
What have been your biggest highlights of your career so far?
There have been quite a few. One of the biggest was graduating with distinction during my Masters, which really set the tone for my journey. Another highlight has been the opportunity to inspire women and young girls who aspire to work in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I was recently part of a photo exhibition aimed at encouraging more women to pursue careers in these fields, and it's due to be released soon, which is incredibly exciting.
Additionally, receiving recognition for my work on this project has been very rewarding, and being a part of such a significant collaborative effort has been a fulfilling experience. It’s amazing how much has happened in such a short time, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to continue on this path, learning and growing as I go. I want to keep taking on meaningful work and contributing as much as I can to both the industry and society. Sustainability and project management are two areas I'm passionate about, so I plan to keep pursuing opportunities that allow me to make a positive impact in those fields. Ultimately, I hope to keep evolving in my career, staying adaptable, and driving change in a way that aligns with my values and long-term goals.
