More about Manoj

What route did you take into postgraduate study?
I did a Bachelor of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai. I have two years of work experience as a soft skills trainer in Gopast Centre Pvt Ltd whilst I worked as a member of educational board.

When choosing a Masters degree, what did you consider it important to have?
For me the main reason for choosing NBS was the multi-cultural environment.

What were your reasons for studying a Masters degree and why did you choose Nottingham Business School?
After working for a couple of years, I wanted to equip myself with a Masters degree to improve my skills and knowledge. I chose NBS because my research on internet showed that this place was everything I was looking in terms the modules offered, the accreditation and opportunities for self-development.

I wanted a business school that would not only provide me with a Masters degree but also develop and enhance my overall personality.

The internship option and CMI accreditation were also a real attraction for me.

Why did you choose to study MSc Management and what did you enjoy about it?
I was looking for a degree that would give me detailed knowledge of management all the way from the basics to the expertise. What I loved about the NBS was that we could tailor core modules which gave us flexibility to pursue our individual areas of interest.

For example, I got an opportunity to do an internship and gain experience in a different country. I applied for the internship and was asked to submit a brief write up and a video of me answering a couple of questions. The selection process seemed thorough and methodical as my personal tutor's insights were also considered.

A key feature that attracted me to the degree was how it combines the theoretical side with the practical and this represents my favourite aspect of my NBS experience.

Have you benefited from the services provided by the Employability Team?
I found the employability team to be very resourceful. I attended their drop-in services to tailor my CV. The team were always able to help and guide me in the right direction every time I visited.

Describe what your seminars are like and how they differ from your undergraduate experience?
My undergraduate degree was in Aeronautical Engineering from India where the education system is mostly learning based.

At NBS I found the Masters degree is more inclined towards work based learning. My professors encouraged me to challenge their views and get involved in discussions in class. A typical class would have a combination of student presentations, case study analysis and discussions.

What are the key skills you have developed during your time at NBS?
Critical thinking is the most important skill I developed during my course. The course required us to be critical about the concepts and theories that we learn every day. Criticising and discussing the works of several scholars improved my confidence and communication skills too.

Do you feel that your overall experience in the degree will make you more competitive in the job market?
Certainly, this course has several aspects that has given me a lot of practical experience. The focus has always been on becoming a global manager and to paraphrase one of my professor, “this course transforms you into global managers who can be airdropped into any part of the world”.

The degree has made me understand what management is like in the business world and has made me aware of the common mistakes most managers make.

What do you think sets Nottingham Business School apart from other business schools or colleges?
NBS provides not only great academic accreditation with AACSB and the CMI Diploma, but also personalisation in its modules, excellent employability services, various self-development events and a lot more!

NBS is a top-notch business school because the focus is always on the students and everyone at the school works really hard to make our experience here worthwhile.

How have you found moving to and living in Nottingham?
Nottingham is probably the best student city around. The city is full of entertainment, fun and there is always something new and exciting to do. Most places offer student discounts and I saved a lot of money because of that.

There are great clubs to hang out with friends, it is easy to get around using trams, taxis, buses and trains. It is like a small international hub where students from different countries are mixed together.

What are your short term and long term career plans?
My short-term plan is to use the skills and knowledge gained during my time at NBS to manage my family business. In the future I see myself as a successful entrepreneur using the management theories and concepts I have developed here.

NBS has broaden my horizons and given me the confidence to be an entrepreneur.
