Why NTU...

What inspired you to study your subject?

"Like most Criminology students, I think I’ve seen every true crime documentary ever and I have always had an interested in Criminology. But this course takes a simple interest in crime to the next level. You’ll get to hear the who, what, when, where but most importantly the how and why. It will encourage you to think critically and explore new avenues of crime you’ve never even heard of. You’ll get to hear from experts in their fields and hear a wide range of opinions from all different backgrounds. This course really has it all."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"Truthfully, I wasn’t really sure about going to university and I remember dragging my parents to so many different open days thinking “this isn’t for me” but then I came to NTU and all of that changed. The lecturers were professional and friendly, the prospectus had a range of topics and had a great balance of study and real-world experience, and the facilities like Boots Library really impressed me. Not forgetting the lively city life and student living. I could really see myself starting a new chapter as a NTU student."

What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?

"I’ve loved every minute of my course but a particular highlight was the Applied Criminology Module in Year 2 where we got to participate in a live project with HMP Rye Hill. The project involved working with both staff and residents to improve their experiences with the Key Worker Scheme. This was so fulfilling and a once in a lifetime opportunity I’m incredibly grateful for."

Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"During my 3^rd year I was 1 of 3 Student Course Reps. This involved termly meetings with staff to discuss issues fellow students raised with us, as well as involvement with NTSU. I found this role rewarding as I was able to represent Year 3 Criminology Students in important discussions around the future of the course. It also confirmed to me that the university wanted to actively ensure that each student had the best experience as they were open to hear the opinions and suggestions of students themselves. If you get the opportunity to take part in this, I encourage you to consider it."

On Placement...

Have you completed any work placements on your course? 

"During my second year I got the privilege to work alongside Nottingham’s HM Coroner’s Service, whose work is so valuable to the community. Here I was responsible for digitising completed inquests and I got to experience what a day in the life could look like working in the service. I also got the privilege to sit-in on a live inquest that was going through their court which allowed me to see how an inquest is conducted. I love that this course gives you so many opportunities to experience a variety of fields in Criminology, it’s a great way to explore new career pathways and gain experience in the industry."

Support...

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"They are incredibly supportive not only with university work but they love a chat too! One thing to remember is they are in your corner and they want to see you succeed so don’t suffer in silence if you are struggling. There is also a range of fantastic services to help you with anything from academic writing to help with finances. I always felt supported during my time at NTU."

Outside of the Lecture Theatre...

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"Yes! My university friends are people I couldn’t imagine my life without. Remember that you are all in the same boat, so knock on your flatmates door, ask that person on your course to the pub or join a society. You’ll soon find your people."

"The employability team at NTU is amazing! They provide you with such a range of support like careers advice if you have no clue what will come next or simply helping you improve your CV. They even offer support 3 years after you graduate so it is never too late to get into contact with them."

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

"DO IT! Blink and you’ll miss it! Don’t take one moment for granted and put yourself outside of your comfort zone, saying yes might be the best thing you do."
