More about Isabelle
Why NTU...
Why did you choose NTU and your course?
"I initially chose BA (Hons) Primary Education (QTS) but then decided to pursue a BA (Hons) Special Educational Needs Disability and Inclusion (SENDI) as I wanted to be an advocate to supporting and providing equity, accessibility and inclusion in Education for all learners as we each have unique learning requirement through the spectrum of educational needs and competencies. I believe this is a very rewarding mission in life, knowing that I can contribute to making a real difference in a student’s life, one child at a time!
Moreover, NTU was among a handful of universities to provide this unique course, in addition, my dad, a former NTU graduate with a Masters degree has highly praised NTU and the quality of teaching, all of which has contributed to my decision. Funny enough, I have a photo of my dad carrying me during his graduation ceremony photoshoot when I was only 4 months old!"
What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?
"The experience so far has been rewarding, as I have truly enjoyed each module, while appreciating the knowledge gained in the process overall. There have been many highlights, few to mention were learning in the outdoors, sensory story-telling, topic debates and my work placement."
Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?
"Absolutely. NTU has an array of extra-curricular activities and societies available and I have enrolled in a few, one of which supplements my studies, that is the British Sign Language Society (BSL). In addition, I enjoy learning languages and my plan for the next academic year is to enrol with the University Language Programme (ULP) at NTU to learn a new foreign language to further enhance my academic skills and professionally empower linguistic diversity in Education."
On placement...
Have you completed any work placements on your course? If so, tell us about your experience – where did you go, what did you do, what skills have you gained and what have you enjoyed the most?
"Yes, and it has been such a rewarding experience! I completed my work placement as a teaching assistant in a mainstream primary school, which caters for a diverse range of learners and inclusion based in Cheshire. It has given me a hands-on experience and insight when engaging with staff and students of all learning capabilities and needs, while applying my academic skills into professional practice."
Do you have any memorable moments from your placement?
"Indeed, plenty of memorable moments, one of which was very heartfelt, which was on my last day of my placement, when the staff and year group students collaborated together for a surprise farewell and handmade thank you cards. From the very beginning, I felt very welcomed, which has given me a sense of purpose and contribution, all of which have been very rewarding and positive overall."
Support...
What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?
"The BA SENDI team have been very supportive and have provided us with an interactive and engaging learning environment through open classroom discussions, topic related debates and hands-on learning experiences. Moreover, the NTU staff has been welcoming, including the Library team, who have been supportive when it comes to providing further guidance in academic skills. Overall, I have a lot of respect and appreciation to my tutors and NTU staff."
The next steps...
What’s next for you after NTU?
"After my undergraduate degree, it is my aim to complete a PGCE to gain QTS and then work towards a Masters degree. In addition, I would like to broaden my career opportunities, cultural awareness and learn languages to support SEND students and include students of diverse backgrounds, all of which fosters inclusive practices and equity in Education."
Advice...
What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?
"From my experience, this course has been very interactive and involves reading, research and communication. All of which have been very enriching while gaining deeper knowledge of the course modules. The tutors have delivered the course materials with much enthusiasm and will always give you support when needed. Furthermore, my advice would be to adapt to good academic habits when it comes to time management, balancing priorities, and utilising the resources available for your support."
