In partnership NTU, RCA, Forbes Project, Of Many Circles and Primary.

Please be advised the final application deadline for September 2023 entry has now passed. Scholarship applications submitted after 4pm (BST) on Wednesday 28 June 2023 will not be considered.  Find out about our other bursaries and scholarships and if you're eligible to apply.

The Nottingham School of Art & Design will be offering a full fee bursary for up to 3 students, who hold an offer on the MFA Fine Art-full time course for September 2023.

The fellowship includes a full tuition fee reduction and a £1,000 cash bursary for materials, awarded at the start of each year of study. If successful, your tuition fee will be amended at the time of enrolment and the cash bursary paid near the start of the academic year.

This unique opportunity to develop your career in Fine Art at NTU will also provide:

  • Mentoring with arts organisations including the Royal College of Art, Forbes Projects, Of Many Circles, and Primary
  • Access to a creative workspace in Nottingham
  • Opportunities to explore critical thinking around racial politics in the arts
  • Exhibition opportunities

The fellowship will be awarded to candidates who closely meet or exceed the criteria for the award. The scholarship decision is made by a committee and the decisions of the committee are final.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Have an offer of a place on MFA Fine Art FT, starting in September 2023
  • Be of black heritage or ethnicity
  • Be classed as a Home student for tuition fee purposes

Preference may be given to those living in disadvantaged areas - including areas with low participation in HE - as defined by Office for Students POLAR data.

Applications received after 16:00 BST (4pm) on the day of the deadline will not be considered.

Deadline for scholarship application

September 2023

28 June 2023 at 4 pm (final deadline)

1. To be eligible to apply for the Now / Black Fellows, applicants must:

  • Have been offered a place on MFA Fine Art-full time course
  • Be of black heritage or ethnicity
  • Be classed as a Home student for tuition fee purposes

2. Please do not send your scholarship application before, or with, your application to study at NTU. You must have an offer for an eligible course and have been allocated an NTU ID number before submitting your scholarship application.

3. To apply for this scholarship, you must be classed as a Home student for tuition fees purposes. Please visit for information on the scholarships available for International students.

4. Students who receive sponsorship (i.e., some or all of your tuition fees are being paid for) from their employers, government or a funding body are not eligible to apply for this scholarship award.

5. Applicants may only apply for this scholarship once per academic year per offer. The offer of a place must be on an eligible course.

6. Applicants are only eligible to apply for a scholarship if they are due to enrol on the first year of a course in September 2023.

7. Applicants must be starting a new postgraduate course. NTU cannot consider applications from students who are currently studying at NTU unless progressing onto a new postgraduate course.

8. Applications received after 16:00 BST (4pm) on the deadline date will not be considered.

9. This application form is for eligible postgraduate taught master’s courses only. Please do not use this form to apply for undergraduate scholarships or research funding.

10. If you have been made an offer of a place to study on an eligible course, three scholarships are available - including a full tuition fee waiver and £1,000 cash bursary for each year of study.

11. The scholarship will be awarded as a full tuition fee reduction and a cash bursary. If you are awarded a scholarship, your fee will be adjusted at the point of enrolment, and the cash bursary will be paid near the start of each academic year.

12. It is expected that any money received as part of the scholarship will be spent on course materials, and receipts may be requested.

13. The scholarship is not transferable and will not be awarded if you choose to defer your entry to a different start date, or if you choose to transfer to a different course at NTU. Students must re-apply for the scholarship should it still be available.

14. Applicants will be informed whether they have (or have not) been awarded a scholarship (and of the value of the scholarship awarded) within four weeks of the application deadline date.

15. The scholarship will be awarded when an applicant accepts their scholarship offer, accepts and meets the conditions of their course offer, and is eligible to enrol on the course. If you do not formally accept the scholarship within the deadline when requested, then NTU reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship and award to another candidate.

16. Scholarships are competitive and selection is based on the information provided on the scholarship application form. It is, therefore, of great importance that you give your scholarship statements careful thought and preparation, and that you refer to the criteria provided on the application form.

17. If your scholarship application is successful, it is expected that you will be able to commit the time and effort to the Fellowship, in addition to fulfilling the demands of your course. This includes but is not limited to, networking, attending symposiums and completing additional course activities.

18. If your scholarship is successful, we may ask you to become a student ambassador, or appear in online and / or printed marketing materials for the University. For example, providing a student profile and a photograph which may be used to promote the University and the University’s scholarship schemes and courses. Your name and course will be printed in the Scholarships Awards Celebration Programme. If you do not wish for us to use your data in this manner, please notify us as soon as possible by emailing

19. In the event that a student who has been awarded a scholarship fails to complete an eligible course or chooses to retake the course or undertake another eligible course, then the scholarship will not be applied again, regardless of the reason for doing so. Students must re-apply for the scholarship should it still be on offer.

20. In the event that a student who has been awarded a scholarship withdraws from the course or their studies are terminated (by the student or by NTU), they will not be eligible to receive further instalments.

21. If a student suspends their studies, they will not be eligible to receive further instalments.

22. Following a period of suspension and upon resumption of studies, NTU may, at its discretion, review and, where appropriate, reinstate a student’s entitlement to the scholarship or bursary.

23. If a student is required to repeat an academic year of study (either in full or in part), the scholarship will be suspended during the repeat year of study and no payments will be made.

24. Students are obliged to inform NTU immediately of any changes in their circumstances which may affect their entitlement to receive the scholarship. In the event of failure by a student to notify NTU promptly of any such changes, NTU will be entitled to recover any payments made or adjust (as appropriate) the scholarship amount.

25. If a student makes a false or materially incorrect declaration that results in NTU awarding them a scholarship/bursary, then the scholarship will be cancelled, and no further payments will be made. Depending on circumstance, NTU may attempt to recover some or all of any payments already made.

26. If NTU makes a payment which was not expected (i.e., was not in the scholarship payment schedule provided to the awardee at the start of the academic year), the student must let NTU know as soon as they are aware that this has happened. NTU will be entitled to recover any payments made in error.

27. NTU’s decision in all matters relating to the scholarship is final.
