The Expert Series

The Expert Series offers your students the opportunity to hear directly from NTU academics on a wide range of subject areas.

Teacher delivering a presentation to students

Our expert academics will deliver a 45-60 minute session, bringing fascinating topics to life in an engaging way that demonstrates to students how these subjects are taught at university.

In some cases, subject content will link directly to the Level 3 syllabus that your students are studying. It encourages them to deepen their understanding and interest in the broader subject area.

Talks include information about future career destinations and provide students with an opportunity to ask questions and debate the topic with an expert.

All of our available sessions are listed below by subject.

For more information, or to book a session, please contact post16@ntu.ac.uk.

Animal Science, Zoology, Ecology and Wildlife Conversation

Superpowers, from invisibility to laser beams, are behind all superheroes (and villains) but how could these superpowers evolve, and have any already evolved in the animal kingdom? This session will cover evolution via natural selection, and look at animal adaptations.

Bioscience

Interactive session with hands-on activities to help students understand what antimicrobial resistance is, why it is such an important global problem, and what is being done to tackle it.

This experiment studies the response of blowfly larvae (maggots) to light. It offers opportunities to discuss how maggots respond to the direction of light sources and their colour. Maggots usually behave in a predictable way in response to a stimulus in their surroundings. A few days before they pupate they will crawl away from light. This response is known as negative phototaxis. It increases the likelihood that the maggot will reach a suitable environment, so has a survival value for them.

Hands on activity in which students design an experiment then take environmental samples onto agar plates to find out how many microbes are present and how diverse they are.

Hands on activity learning to use a micropipette and understanding how and why these are used in biology labs.

A lecture-style taster session, introducing the wonders of stem cells and their potential to regenerate our bodies.

*Microscopes required.

Taster lecture about the special abilities some bacteria have, how these can cause problems (e.g. antibiotic resistance) and how Super Microbes could be used to save the planet (e.g. biofuel production, plastic degradation).

An interactive session in which you will learn fascinating facts about our nervous system. After a brief introduction, you will have an opportunity to look at histological samples of various nervous system-related specimens including: the spinal cord, cerebellum, neuron smears and glial cells, meninges, and peripheral nerves. This will help you to gain appreciation of the microscopic anatomy of these structures.

*Maximum number of students: 30; Length of session: 1-2 hours.

Business Management and International Business

How studying a language and gaining an international experience is becoming increasingly important to equip young people in business to make sure we can trade and compete in the global market.

We hear a lot now about Artificial Intelligence and how it will change the World.  We want to examine those claims in more detail and consider how AI might really affect the world of Business. Could it just impact employment by changing job roles and skill requirements? Or might it change what businesses look like and the whole way they operate?  Why not listen and hear what our Academics think.

Computer Science

This involves cross-platform mobile application development for both Android and iOS using Flutter. Students get the opportunity to see their app built in real time.

Using Sphero mini-robots and Lifesize robots to explore computational thinking and apply coding knowledge.

Development of air quality devices to include understanding circuit building, connection of sensors, soldering and coding.

Writing python programmes to demonstrate applying coding skills in real-world scenarios.

Economics

In July 2023, Australia appointed their first woman economist to head the central bank. Great news, but this should become the norm. However, in the UK, there is a growing decline of women studying economics.
