Chris Udell – Turning a design passion into a freelance career

Chris Udell graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2021 with a degree in Product Design.

Now a Freelance 3D Artist, Chris specialises in high-end product visualisation – bringing ideas to life through rendering and Computer Aided Design (CAD). We sat down with Chris to learn more about his work.

On finding his niche of rendering elements

Throughout his time at NTU, Chris found himself naturally drawn to the CAD and rendering elements of design projects.

The days spent taking my ideas from 2D sketch to 3D model seemed to pass the quickest, and I found it was so much easier to get lost in the work compared to any other part of my degree. So naturally, it made sense for me to pursue this area of design and try to turn it into a career.

Milestones that shaped the journey

Reflecting on his entrepreneurial path so far, Chris identifies three standout moments:

  1. First physical product – During his placement year with NTU Enterprise, Chris developed a line of men’s rings under the brand London Laine Design. Chris not only designed his rings but was also able to bring them to life. Holding the finished product in his hands was a real stand out moment.
  2. Professional breakthrough – Landing a role at INNEO, a digital transformation company supporting businesses with product development, platform solutions and more. Working at INNEO gave Chris the opportunity to work hands-on with KeyShot and build experience while getting paid.
  3. Making the leap – After years of being employed and gaining experience across the professional landscape, Chris' commitment to investing his time and energy into his freelancing journey has been a big shift. He shares reflections on how although at times daunting, this new phase has been incredible for his growth - both personally and professionally. He is embracing trying new ways of working and figuring what works for him along the way.

How NTU Enterprise supported development of Chris's business

The connection to NTU Enterprise began during Chris' degree, when he took on a placement year with the team.

I did my placement year with NTU Enterprise and gained mentoring support from Enterprise Advisors, Diana Pasek-Atkinson and Phil Clarke which was invaluable. I received two lots of funding from the Santander Spark Follow On Fund which helped me so much during the time of London Laine Design where I had no money to manufacture the rings. Being a part of NTU Enterprise's network has ensured I have people to turn to for advice if I’m struggling.

Words of wisdom for other students wanting to start a venture

Just try it. You’ll never know if it’s for you unless you try it. So far, my most valuable lesson has been the classic “if you don’t ask, you don’t get”. Being able to put your pride to one side and ask for help or not being too embarrassed of rejection.  The worst that can happen is they say no and it’s so true.

There have been so many times where I’ve asked for something, expecting nothing, and then been pleasantly surprised. As long as you’re respectful, have good intentions and would be willing to help should it be the other way around, then ask for help whenever you can. Realise how many people are better than you and keep learning.

Advice to aspiring founders

Chris’s message to students considering entrepreneurship is clear:

How will you ever know if it's for you if you don't give it a go? Some people need structure and deadlines, others thrive with creative freedom. I’ve found that the pressure of freelancing pushes me to grow - and that’s exactly what I want right now.
