Open Dome VIRTUAL - Dark Side Of Galaxies - Dark Matter and Rotation Curves

Only 5% of our Universe is normal stuff. Explore how we could measure Dark Matter in galaxies at our NTU observatory in the talk The Dark Side of Galaxies given by Dr Daniel Brown (NTU), Adrien Le Guennec (NTU & IUT de Lannion - France), and Rasika Deshpande (NTU).

Event details
Galaxies like our own Milky Way are not all what they seem to be. They contain a vast amount of material that we just cannot see. Matter that is entirely dark and not fussed about light at all. This is what astronomers call Dark Matter and makes up approximately 27% of the entire Universe. With Dark Energy contributing 68%, this leaves a measly 5% for all the normal stuff. But how do we even know that this Dark Matter really exists?
Over this summer period the NTU observatory has supported several student projects to start and explore galaxies and their spectroscopic properties related to their dynamics. Join Dr Daniel Brown (NTU), Adrien Le Guennec (NTU & IUT de Lannion - France), and Rasika Deshpande (NTU) in their talk The Dark Side of Galaxies to hear more about this ongoing work. You will hear how Dark Matter impacts on the rotation of galaxies and how our NTU observatory is currently measuring spectra of galaxies. This talk will also give you the unique opportunity to look behind the scenes of our high-resolution spectroscopic unit and how works.
Booking is required for this event while attending in person. While attending, you consent to filming, photography, and sound recording – which may include you as a member of the audience – and its use in publication or advertising distribution, either printed or online, without payment or copyright.
This event is taking place as a hybrid event on NTU campus. This will allow a flexible way of attending. You are currently booking to attend virtually and only the talk component. A link to the material on YouTube will be emailed to everyone who is attending virtually in their confirmation email. We will be happy to answer questions posted as response to the video over the following days. So do keep booking onto this event. If you haven't booked you might need to wait a while before you can see it.
You can also attend the event in person and enter our planetarium but would need to book the Open Dome IN PERSON event to purchase your ticket.
