Join us for a guided walkthrough of Grayson Perry's Man Hours and Paula Rego's Visions of English Literature at Nottingham's Lakeside Arts.

Grayson Perry: Man Hours
The printed image as a vehicle for social commentary and satire has a long history that dates to William Hogarth in the 18th Century and beyond. Grayson Perry’s work sits in that tradition. He is a witty chronicler of contemporary life with all its follies, excesses, and delusions, but his wry observations are tempered by humour and compassion.

Complementing Paula Rego’s subversion of fairy tale illustrations, Perry plunders the visual culture of the past to explore a psychological map of the present day. The prints in this exhibition span twenty years of the artist’s work in the medium.

Paula Rego: Visions of English Literature
Paula Rego was of the great artists of our time, whose work tells stories that combine fantasy, imagination, innocence, and cruelty, in order to explore life in all its complexity and mystery.

This new exhibition casts a spotlight on her remarkable practice as a graphic artist, and particularly the British literary influences that inspired her most ambitious bodies of works in printmaking: Nursery Rhymes, Peter Pan and Jane Eyre. Showcasing each series of prints combined with unseen preparatory sketches, etching plates and other ephemera, this rare exhibition offers an insight into how Rego transforms this material into startlingly original and unexpected pictures.
