Event details

Professor Emeritus Ralph Henham retired from Nottingham Trent University in 2015 at the end of a long and distinguished academic career of almost forty years.

In November 2023, a Festschrift dedicated to the work of Professor Henham was published. Edited by Dr Paul Behrens of the University of Edinburgh (and a former NTU colleague), the book comprises 17 substantive chapters authored by leading national and international scholars followed by a reflections from some of those whom Ralph collaborated through his career. It provides a critical examination of seminal issues within the main areas of criminal justice: its theoretical framework, domestic, comparative, transnational, and international criminal law. With a comprehensive introduction and conclusion drawing the various strands together, it offers a rigorous, coherent overview of the key issues in play in contemporary international criminal justice.

Nottingham Law School is delighted to invite contributors to the volume as well as current and former friends and colleagues of Ralph’s to attend the launch of the book (either virtually or in person). We will be joined by Ralph and his wife Annemarie as our guests of honour. The event will begin with an informal lunch for those present, followed by a keynote address by Juan Méndez, former Special Adviser of the Secretary General on the Prevention of Genocide and former Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment who will present a paper on "Genocide as a Challenge to International Criminal Justice: the Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide"

The remainder of the afternoon will comprise reflections and discussions by the editor and a number of contributors to the volume.

Please note that in-person places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Virtual places are also available.

The link to the event will be circulated in advance for those attending virtually.
