Professor Jo Richardson's Inaugural Lecture
There’s No Place Like Home

There is no ‘place’ like home – but rather a series of social, economic, political, psychological, and physical practices that enable places to become home. In this lecture, Professor Jo Richardson, will explore our understanding of place and identity through the presence, or absence, of home. The lecture will show that our homes are foundational for individual and community wellbeing, and that an interdisciplinary policy step-change to ensure sufficient quality and affordable housing is key to our collective journey ‘home’.

The national charity, Shelter, reports that 1 in 182 of us in England is homeless: 309,000 people (including 140,000 children) without a safe, secure or affordable place to live. The number of households living in temporary accommodation has risen by 35% over the last five years, and local authorities in England are spending over £2.4bn a year on homelessness services (National Audit Office, 2024). Meanwhile, government has not been delivering against their own target for the level of new housing that is required to meet need. As a new government launches an ambitious plan to build more accommodation to resolve Britain’s housing crises, it is an opportune time to consider what we mean by ‘home’.
This lecture is about the fundamental conditions for ‘home’, that we might look again at how we engage with one another in the planning, design, delivery and management of a range of types of accommodation and support in our communities. It will explore how we perceive our own feelings of safety and security in relation to our physical dwelling and surroundings. Jo will reflect on the role of government, a range of public sector agencies, social housing professionals, and indeed all citizens, in supporting the provision of a safe and secure place to call home, for all.
