Crafting impactful narratives and outputs on climate and housing in Brazil
A British Academy funded International Writing workshop for Early Career Researchers

We are pleased to invite applications for a British Academy-funded international writing workshop from early career researchers (ECRs) based in Brazil working at the intersection of climate change, housing, architecture and the construction management. This initiative aims to strengthen academic writing skills, support international collaboration, and promote the global visibility of research led from Brazil.

Event details
Extreme climate events like flooding are becoming more common due to the climate crisis, with negative impacts on urban populations. This workshop aims to amplify the voices of architecture and built environment early career researchers in Brazil to discuss strategies to help prepare for and deal with the impacts of extreme climate events and the housing crisis. Participants will interact with experts, including editors from high-impact journals, to gain practical writing skills, mentorship, career development advice, and improve their bid writing skills. The workshop will provide a platform for knowledge sharing, enabling collective understanding of interdisciplinary climate crisis challenges and the proposal of innovative solutions. Workshop participants will be mentored to write and revise high-quality journal papers and get them ready for publication.
Expected outcomes include targeted advice and support on academic publications, career development, bid targeting and writing and interinstitutional partnerships, advancing the promotion of research emanating from Brazil.
Target attendees
Target attendees are Brazilian architecture and Built Environment (BE) Early Career Researchers (ECRs), defined as near PhD completion or within 8 years post-PhD. The organisers believe that the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that each participant brings can enrich the learning process. By fostering inclusivity, the workshop encourages collaboration and dialogue, allowing individuals from different racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds to share insights. This will empower participants by validating their voices and experience.
Workshop outline
The workshop will be held in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, 21-23 September 2025. Porto Alegre suffered from the biggest flooding in over 50 years in 2024, with more than 580,000 people displaced and almost 70,000 of them depending on shelters. According to a state government report, 2.3 million people were affected by the torrential rain and floods, and more than 90% of Rio Grande do Sul’s 497 municipalities have been affected. This demonstrates the urgent need to increase the volume and quality of architecture and BE research on climate crisis. Furthermore, the workshop will be linked to SIBRAGEC – ‘Simposio Brasileiro de Gestao e Economia da Construcao’ taking place in Porto Alegre, 24-26 of September 2025. SIBRAGEC is the largest biannual Brazilian Built Environment conference, with an average of 200 participants. This will encourage a high volume of applications from a diverse range of ECRs across Brazil and enhance their participation in the workshop.
