The soft aspects of the infrastructure of regionalism in the Middle East have previously been studied, while the impact of hard infrastructure in the region, in particular transport infrastructure, has received little attention. Dr Imad El-Anis is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Nottingham Trent University.

The literature on democratic backsliding in the European Union is growing and offers evidence of straightforward, mechanistic processes driven by the governments of some Eastern European member states. This paper’s point of departure is that democratic backsliding must be captured within its proper social context, which importantly involves processes of contestation against the phenomenon.

This paper discusses the origins of India’s foreign policy and argues that it is rooted in its emergence as a nation-state. India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, had a strong influence on India’s foreign policy in the early years after India achieved independence from British colonial rule.
