Get involved with NTU Music this year

From brass bands to rock bands, NTU Music has lots on offer – whether you’re an absolute beginner or an expert musician.

With a host of opportunities for you to take to the stage and showcase your talents, here are just some of the ways you could get involved.

Singing groups

If you like to sing, why not come along to a rehearsal with their friendly Choir? With membership of around 150 staff, students and members of the local community, you don’t need to read music or have any previous singing experience.

Performance opportunities include Star Wars with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra later this month, a Family Christmas Concert in December, and Symphonic Queen and The Beatles with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra in the spring.

There’s also NTU Voices – a non-auditioned ensemble for students and staff, with a repertoire of well-known pop songs and show tunes. Perfect if you enjoy singing contemporary music in a fun and relaxed environment.

Start a band

If you’re hoping to start a band while at university, NTU Music’s Band Development Programme is a great place to start. Join the programme’s band book and find other musicians with similar influences and tastes. Weekly jam sessions will help you to meet like-minded people, and regular gig nights around the city provide opportunities for you to perform and test out new material.

Join an instrumental ensemble

No matter what instrument you play, NTU Music has a whole range of ensembles for you to get involved in. Their Big Band, Brass Band, Concert Band, String Sinfonia and Drumline are always looking out for new members, and welcome musicians of all abilities. With various performances throughout the year, competitions, and European tours, you’re guaranteed to make new friends and have lots of laughs.

Sign up for musical theatre classes

Combine your love of dancing, singing and acting, and sign up for NTU Music’s popular musical theatre classes. Held at the Music Centre and suitable for all abilities, they’re a great way to keep active, have fun, and develop your performing arts skills.

Experience a concert

If you’d rather sit in the audience than stand on the stage, NTU Music offers lots of exciting events for you to enjoy. Their concert season runs from October to June, featuring everything from students and staff ensembles to world-class artists. With lots of free events and discounted tickets for NTU students, there’s no excuse not to come along.
