NTU Sport Club Awards 2021

The NTU Sport Club Awards took place on 19 May 2021, this year the Awards were hosted on Instagram as a live event. The Sport Club Awards recognised the clubs and their members who had worked exceptionally hard, during the challenges of lockdown and break in competitive activity.

NTU Sport Club Awards 2021 - The results are in!

The NTU Sport Club Awards took place on 19 May 2021, this year the Awards were hosted on Instagram as a live event. The Sport Club Awards recognised the clubs and their members who had worked exceptionally hard, during the challenges of lockdown and break in competitive activity.

NTU Sport are extremely proud of all our clubs’ achievements this year; and thankful to the clubs that overcame huge challenges and still managed to work together successfully as a club.

List of winners

Club of the Year - Netball

Netball had fundraised for Macmillan, with 35 members taking part in an online race night and a further 40+ members contributing. Their members also volunteered for 80 hours, as well as their committee contributing towards a program aimed at supporting physical and mental well-being. Due to this, and their numerous other achievements, Netball were successfully confirmed as “Club of the year”.

Zoe Clifton, VP Sport commented:

“Congratulations and well done for all that you’ve achieved”

Also a big well done to Climbing and Rowing for their nominations in this category.

Committee of the Year – Dance

The winners of this award had delivered a variety of different sessions, as well as social events, making their club both welcoming and inclusive. Dance received over 300 video auditions at the start of term. Dance used social media platforms to increase their interaction with their members throughout the lockdown period.

Ella Coulthard, Sport Development Officer commented:

“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with you this year, and I really wish you well in the future.”

Well done to Rowing and Karate who were also nominated in this category.

Community Engagement Award – Men’s Rugby Union

Men’s Rugby Union had raised money for various charities and events over the course of the academic year. They raised over £9000 for their Movember challenge, held a mental marathon where two members ran 26 miles to raise money and awareness of mental health concerns in young men. Also in memory of Tom Miller, the club raised over £40,000 for the charity Odd Balls.

Stacey Trainer, Sport Volunteering Coordinator commented:

“You’ve organised and fundraised for wonderful causes and we look forward to seeing what your club gets up to over the rest of this term and into the new academic year. Congratulations!”

Well done to Karate and Football (Brackenhurst) who were also nominated in this category.

Individual Recognition Award - Carli Nicholls

The winner of this award had made their club a friendly and welcoming place. Carli participated and helped take fitness sessions aimed at all fitness levels. She encouraged new members to give the sport a go and helped members understand a sport they had not tried before. Carli worked hard to make the Swimming & Water Polo club not only a place to keep fit, but also make friends through social activity.

Steven Drake, Sports Development Officer, commented, “Congratulations Carli, and well done. Your hard work has certainly not gone unnoticed.”

Well done to our other nominees Hannah Williams and Lewis Lennon.

Outstanding Achievement Award – Gaelic Football

As part of #IWill week, Gaelic Football raised £800 for the Trussell Trust, by completing a virtual running challenge. The club have offered a mix of in-person and virtual sessions, as well as designing their own home-training guide which was used throughout lockdown. They were able to create their own lockdown league, where they linked up with other university clubs in the Midlands. They achieved so much after only become a club a year ago.

James Hayter, Director of Sport, commented:

“Congratulations! It’s amazing to see such a new club achieve so much so quickly. Well done!”

Well done to Equestrian and Netball who were also nominated.

Outstanding Contribution Award - Aidan Newbery

The winner of this award had been President of their club for 3 years and whilst in charge had helped Karate to progress and grow. Aidan increased the number and quality of sessions, including coaching a number of sessions himself, improving communications between the committee and members on social, as well as establishing a club newsletter. Whilst being a member of their club Aidan won numerous medals, including a bronze at BUCS.

Katy Teasdale, Sport Development Manager, shared her thoughts on Aidan’s win

“Well done Aidan, and a huge thank you from NTU Sport for all the work you have done over the years. We really appreciate it and wish you the very best of luck in your future. We know whatever you do you’ll make a huge success of.”
