Nottingham Trent University are proud to announce a newly created sports scholarship in memory of Tom Miller, who sadly passed away in December 2020.

Tom was a model student athlete at NTU, captaining the men’s rugby 1st XV, a student ambassador raising money and awareness for Oddballs charity, recently signed as Championship Rugby player with Nottingham Rugby. Tom was loved and cherished by all who knew him. His commitment, passion, sportsmanship and love of sport was infectious in our community and his legacy since his passing has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity, as well as having an award named in his honour by England Universities Rugby Union.

NTU Sport and Men’s Rugby Union are awarding the Tom Miller scholarship to an NTU student, who is continuing to study at Masters level and who exhibits the values and behaviours in sport and the wider community, which Tom so passionately portrayed.

The inaugural award of the Tom Miller Scholarship in 2021/22 season goes to Luke Bouchier of the men’s rugby 1st XV. Luke is graduating in Sport and Exercise Science and will be moving into a master’s degree in Mres Sports Science.

On receipt of the Scholarship Luke commented:

“It’s a huge honour to receive the Tom Miller Scholarship Award and I thank the university for this opportunity. This means so much to me, especially as Tom was not only a close friend but someone I looked up to. I will use this opportunity to try replicate Tom’s work ethic towards my studies and rugby, and to develop myself to be a better person. I will constantly try to #bemoretom in everything I do.”

David Ross, Head of Rugby added

“I am over the moon that the university and the rugby programme have come together to honour Tom’s memory and legacy in this way. He was an outstanding person, player and captain of our group, and we miss him every day. I am proud and happy for Luke to be awarded with the first scholarship in Tom’s name, both were great friends. Luke has been an outstanding student athlete in his undergraduate years. We are delighted to help Luke continue his academic studies, as he moves onto he's masters programme and positively impacts tour Rugby programme both on and off the pitch."

Emily Miller, Tom’s mother commented

"We are grateful and humbled by the decision of NTU Sport and Men’s Rugby Union to create a scholarship in Tom's name. Tom was a committed sportsman who tried to lead by example. He put in 100% on and off the pitch and expected his friends and teammates to do the same. His positivity, kindness and sense of humour alongside his work ethic are just some of the attributes we hope future recipients of the scholarship will uphold. We were lucky enough to meet Luke, the first to receive the scholarship.  I'm sure that he will strive to fill those big shoes Tom left.  We miss Tom every day but are thankful his legacy will continue at the university doing the sport he loved."
