Shadow Minister for Universities visit to NTU

Last week we hosted a visit from the Shadow Minister for Universities Matt Western MP. We updated the Minister on a range of issues including our partnership with Mansfield and Ashfield, our commitment to the local community, our sustainability initiatives and new projects such as the forthcoming Art & Design building.

Matt also met with NTSU president Conor Naughton and several students who shared their views on a variety of topics such as mental health and student experience.

He also made a stop at the Dryden Enterprise Centre to talk about the invaluable support local businesses receive from NTU enabling them to grow and thrive as a result.

Professor Edward Peck said: “This visit by Matt Western was a further opportunity to showcase our innovative approach to research and enterprise and teaching and learning as well as to demonstrate how we are shaping the future of higher education in the UK.

“We are pleased to be able to welcome key politicians and influencers to our campuses in person so they can experience first-hand how we are developing new ways for universities to enhance the lives of students and communities.”

Matt Western MP said of the visit: “Over the last 18 months, students have been abandoned by this government.

“During my visit to Nottingham Trent University, meeting with the student union, the Director of Student Support Services and students reinforced my belief that easily accessible, quality mental health support is more important than ever.

“New survey data shows that mental health is top reason why postgraduate students are considering leaving their courses. This is unacceptable.

“Labour is serious about prioritising mental health and will guarantee access to treatment in less than a month for all who need it.

“I want to thank all the students and student representatives that I met on my visit for taking the time to share their experiences with me.”
