Amelia Burton - Level 3 Food Technology Solutions Specialist

Amelia Burton studies at our Brackenhurst campus on the Level 3 Food Technology Solutions Specialist apprenticeship. She mentions “Nottingham Trent Brackenhurst is a lovely, homely campus with good facilities”. When asked what skills and experience she has gained as part of the apprenticeship, Amelia expressed “I have gained valuable work experience and confidence while studying on the apprenticeship”.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

"In 2018 I had just finished my first year of sixth form and wasn’t really sure it was for me. I had always learned better by 'doing' rather than traditional classroom learning. I did a week’s work experience with Griffith and loved it, and so I asked about doing an apprenticeship with them and started on the Level 3 in the October instead of returning to college! I have recently finished my level 3 apprenticeship and decided I wanted to learn more, and as well as being offered a place on a full-time degree course, my employers offered me the opportunity to do a degree apprenticeship."

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current job role and future career?

"This apprenticeship is good as it allows you to gain practical experience while getting a qualification. Once I finish this apprenticeship, I will have several years of industry experience, in addition to a degree. This gives the best possible advantage when it comes to employment, or promotion possibilities.

Whilst studying, it is very useful to get the perspectives of other students who work within other sectors of the industry, who might have different experiences to me."

How have you balanced studying alongside your professional role? How have you found the support from your employer?

"Balancing work alongside study is hard, you need to be prepared to work hard for apprenticeships. However, in the end it is all worth it! My employer has been amazing in giving me the time I need as well as encouraging me on both in work and study."
