Connell Parker - Level 6 Digital and Technology Solutions Professional Degree Apprenticeship

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

"I chose to do an apprenticeship so I could learn on the job. There’s so many different job roles and experiences in IT that in traditional education you just don’t get told about, and through an apprenticeship you get to learn about them and actually experience them first hand."

What stands out about Nottingham Trent University?

"NTU stands out with a great combination of up to date facilities, great accessibility online and supportive lecturers."

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current job role and future career?

"I think the apprenticeship will open up a lot of doors into different opportunities as the experience it gives you is so invaluable when combined with a degree."

How would you rate the teaching and support staff on this apprenticeship?

"I would rate the staff 10/10, they are supportive and offer frequent opportunities for us to get feedback. They care about us and the grades we receive, and that is reflected in the level of detail they go into. I would also say the way NTU has stepped up and returned teaching in person has been great as well and a real testament to the way NTU treats its students."

What do you think of the facilities available at NTU?

"NTU’s facilities are good, the buildings are all new and as an apprentice who is based a while away from campus the online resources are invaluable and crucial for getting the research done."

What is your favourite thing about your apprenticeship?

"My favourite thing about the Apprenticeship has definitely been moving around IT. Getting to experience all different areas and pick up the skills has been really interesting. You also get to meet new people and teams through rotating, and it allows you to build up a network of people that you can keep in contact throughout the Apprenticeship."

What skills and experience have you gained as part of this apprenticeship? Has there been anything that you were not expecting?

"I’ve gained a lot of people skills with emailing and learning how to meet new people and teams. Whereas before I didn’t know how to write an email or meet new people in a workplace setting, being placed into that situation really helps to focus your development. I think I’ve also gained new IT knowledge about my field, which I wasn’t expecting. Before I thought I roughly knew the development process but there are so many support roles and different teams to aid in development that had never crossed my mind."

What advice would you give to individuals considering a higher/ degree apprenticeship?

"Do it! It’s really fun, you learn so much on the job and in university and you get to walk away debt free!"
